On-going training can also take the form of reminders and recaps. One way we do this is through our ‘Theme and Task’ concept. This clearly sets out the daily, weekly and periodic cleaning tasks according to coloured visual themes, so operatives are always clear which tasks are required.

TRAINING ISN’T JUST

ONE WAY Our people are our eyes and ears on client sites, and can often identify new ways of doing things or the need for a new product or piece of equipment. Encouraging this sort of feedback means we can learn from them and improve our operations overall. Training, like communications, shouldn’t be all one way.

This approach empowers our operatives and helps them appreciate their part in the wider team. Being listened to also means they are more likely to take on board training messages, as they understand the wider picture.

A SUSTAINABLE

APPROACH An excellent example of the need for training to run throughout a career is the way we now approach sustainability. It has moved from being a largely non-issue, to a ‘green’ issue to an all-encompassing approach to the way we live and work, with a significant impact on the cleaning industry.

Continuing to use high levels of water and chemicals is not an option and the industry has been evolving over many years to adopt more sustainable approaches – such as our C2Zero programme which brings carbon neutral cleaning to our clients.

Making training more widely available and flexible is important

if people are to be able to access it widely throughout their career.

Operatives have required ongoing training so they understand our approach and also how they can implement it through different cleaning methods, using new products and equipment. As the sustainability agenda continues to progress, we will continue to ensure our operatives are trained to meet its requirements.

Like sustainability approaches, training needs to be holistic and ongoing to be truly effective.
