PAPER & DISPOSABLES

Making sustainablepaper choices

Joel Quick, Sustainability Manager at Northwood Hygiene Products, shares some simple ways to make sure your paper and disposable washroom products are more sustainable.

With sustainability a major priority, it’s important that environmental strategies remain at the forefront of any business framework.

With the latest COP climate conference taking place this month in Brazil, there will be greater pressure for businesses to improve their sustainability initiatives. When it comes to

green credentials, washrooms are often overlooked despite the impact they have. So, how can washroom providers make better decisions around paper and disposables?

Choose FSC

Millions of trees are felled every year just to make toilet tissue, so we must be aware of the impact of deforestation. Making sure paper products are made only from raw materials that have been sustainably sourced – either from recycled materials or from sustainably managed forests – is vital.

At Northwood, we have FSC certified products across all categories, from tissues to towels, totalling over 13m cases of product per year and 100% of our Raphael range is FSC certified.

Go recycled

Another easy switch to make is by choosing papers made from recycled fibres. Our industry has made great progress with new fibre innovations that are sustainable and the recycled products available today are of the same quality as wood-based virgin fibre. These advances in processing technology product development mean that recycled paper can now match virgin fibre in softness and absorbency. Recycled tissue supports circularity and maximises the value from our natural resources.

Traditionally, consumers have associated white tissue with hygiene rather than brown paper. However, the market is evolving and there is a place for more natural-coloured products that look less processed and more sustainable. The introduction of these products is helping to shift perceptions and bring the message home that the colour of the paper is not the priority – these products have the same properties as white paper, but they are more sustainable.

30 | TOMORROW'S CLEANING

Northwood’s range of Natural brown towels, for instance, is made from 100% recycled and untreated packaging, meaning fewer chemicals and processes are used during the manufacturing process. These products are unbleached and visually show the use of recycled fibres to end users better than white products.

We also continue to remove single use, non-renewable components from our products and continue to increase the recycled content of all of our packaging from plastics to paper to minimise our impact.

Reduce paper waste and consumption

Another simple change to make is to opt for Z-fold or roll towel. Northwood’s 250m Raphael roll towel, for instance, presents as one sheet at a time and is designed to minimise the amount of towel taken and change user habits. Furthermore, the VersaTwin infinity paper system is designed to reduce stub roll waste to cut down waste and cost, and make managing washrooms easier.

Recycle in the washroom

Finally, introducing a means of recycling used hand towels at the point of use in the washroom is another impactful way of addressing the amount of waste potentially destined for landfill.

At Northwood, we work with customers to explore recycling a variety of paper waste and we recycle paper hand towels and stub rolls as part of our Green Loop recycling package, making it easy for customers to do their bit. We will take these often-unrecycled items from washrooms, turn them into raw materials and create future sustainable washroom hygiene products, all contributing to circularity.

Making the right choices when it comes to paper and disposable products is easier than you might think, and it all contributes to cutting waste, reducing carbon footprint and preserving our planet’s precious resources.
