Paper towels: Tissue or Crepe?

While studies have shown that hand towels are a more effective solution for preventing the spread of germs, little has been said about whether you should opt for tissue or crepe paper towels for office spaces and public restrooms.

It’s fair to say that not all hand towels are created equal, and there is a significant difference between drying your hands with a tissue paper towel versus crepe paper – from the added durability and reduced waste, to the ease with which towels are dispensed.

The benefits of tissue paper

You may recognise crepe paper hand towels from your school days. Often folded in half and tricky to pull out of the dispenser individually, crepe paper towels are made from pulped paper that’s removed from paper rollers using a creping blade (hence the name).

This results in a thin, flat, and somewhat rough texture that offers little in the way of comfort when you are drying your hands. Although it does the job, the low absorbency of crepe paper results in more sheets being used, and its thin nature means that it often tears when being removed from the dispenser.

By comparison, tissue hand towels are softer, stronger, and more absorbent, meaning you need fewer towels to dry your hands properly. Inevitably, this means you do not need to fill dispensers as often, representing excellent value for money.

Refuse removal is also worth bearing in mind. The ongoing costs of emptying washroom bins and running out of towels more quickly (due to more being needed to dry) can be significant. Choosing a more durable paper towel means your washroom can withstand more visitors, reducing the amount of time it takes to run out of towels.

40 | PAPER & DISPOSABLES Hygiene

Tissue paper towels are more effective at absorbing water, meaning they are also the more hygienic choice for any washroom. When faced with an ineffective crepe paper towel, most users would choose to leave their hands damp rather than reaching for more paper towels.

Unfortunately, damp hands are much more likely to transfer bacteria from one surface to another, posing a risk to washroom visitors and staff. With handwashing a higher priority than ever before, this is a serious concern that should be taken into account when selecting the right hand towels for your business.

Choosing the right dispenser

The right dispenser can make all the difference to cutting back on waste and making the washroom experience as pleasant as possible.

At WEPA Professional, we have developed a range of easy- to-use dispensers from Satino by WEPA, designed to make any trip to the washroom a simple one, while helping to cut back on waste and reduce the spread of germs.

When choosing the right paper towel dispenser for your business, there are a range of options available on the market. From touch-free systems that use a sensor to dispense each towel, to centre feed, auto cut and pull-down options, you can be sure of finding the right system to suit your needs.

Our paper towels are also manufactured from sustainable, 100% recycled materials, so you can rest easy knowing you are choosing an eco-friendly solution.
