Over the last year of the pandemic, the spotlight has understandably been focused on cleaning and hygiene to try to contain the spread of SARS CoV-2. Unfortunately, there has been another casualty of the last year; interior textiles, carpets and rugs.
Much harm is being done to interior textiles from sanitising and disinfecting products formulated for hard surfaces which are sprayed, wiped and fogged by untrained operators on to soft furnishings. This is creating serious issues for carpets and upholstery, such as bleaching, colour change, fibre degradation and rapid soiling, especially on those made with natural fibres.
It was clear that WoolSafe needed to help both with education and specifying which sanitisers and disinfectants are suitable for use on soft furnishings.
This is why WoolSafe Academy has hosted several Infection Control courses, supporting members with discounted training and educating hundreds of professional cleaners about the virus. This has helped keep both the cleaner and customer safe while assisting commercial businesses, retail stores and hospitality to have safe operations and successful re-openings.
WoolSafe has tested and approved several sanitisers that not only kill SARS CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19) but are also safe for use on interior textiles and carpet. These products can be found in the online PDF ‘WoolSafe Booklet – Support and Guidance for Trading Safely During SARS CoV-2’ or on the WoolSafe website product search.
WoolSafe-approved sanitisers that kill SARS CoV-2 include: ENVIROSAFE virus and bacteria control from Alltec, B125 CLENSAN and D500 MICROSAN from Prochem, BarrierTech Surface Disinfectant, Benefect’s Botanical Decon 30 and Botanical Disinfectant Wipes, and some of Diversey’s Oxivir range.
25-year milestone for West Lancashire
cleaning business West Lancashire business owner, Chris Wootton, is celebrating a huge milestone as his domestic cleaning franchise business, Poppies, celebrates its 25-year anniversary.
Launching on 1 April 1996, Chris has grown the business and the team of staff to now deliver over 2500 hours of cleaning every month to homes across West Lancashire.
Rosie Cooper, MP for West Lancashire, joined Chris at the Poppies office in Ormskirk to mark the occasion, along with a few of Poppies’ staff who have worked in the business for over 20 years.
Chris Wootton, Managing Director and franchise owner of Poppies, said: “I’m thrilled to be celebrating my 25th year and sharing this milestone with staff who have been

working with me for almost as long. It’s fair to say that if it wasn’t for my dedicated team of 42 cleaners, I wouldn’t be celebrating here today.
“I have to extend a big thank you to everyone at Poppies for providing an exceptional service to all our customers in and around Ormskirk – their response to the challenges of the last 12 months has been nothing short of incredible.
“Like many other local businesses, we had to put in additional safety measures to keep our services going during the pandemic – luckily when you’re already in the business of cleaning, it’s not an enormous leap to delivering a COVID-secure sanitising experience for customers. More than anything, we’re looking forward to the summer when we can hopefully have a good old get together to properly celebrate 25 years in business.”
