From the frontline

As the nation slowly comes out of hibernation, Karoline Rigby, Operations Manager at Facilicom, explains how ATP testing is giving customers the reassurance they need to reopen their doors.

There’s finally some light at the end of the tunnel. After more than a year in and out of lockdown, we are seeing restrictions lift across the UK.

Businesses up and down the country are preparing to welcome back their staff, customers and guests, but as we’ve seen numerous times over the past 12 months, the easing of lockdown often brings its own set of concerns.

Having worked on the frontline throughout the pandemic, I know only too well how anxiety-inducing newfound freedoms can be for many. From colleagues and family, to suppliers and customers; there is a real nervousness about returning to normality.

Office workers are concerned about returning to their desks, consumers are cautious about hitting the shops, and education providers worry about future outbreaks of COVID-19. Commuters have reservations about using public transport, and despite the packed scenes we witnessed last month, some are still avoiding pubs and restaurants.

Of course, it's only natural to be cautious about COVID-19. After all, it has turned our lives upside down and no one wants to see another lockdown come into force. However, there are ways to minimise the risk, not only to keep infection levels down but to also provide much needed reassurance to those who feel apprehensive.

Cleaning has played a major role in the response to COVID-19 and will continue to do so in the coming months. Hygiene has remained one of the first lines of defence against coronavirus since the pandemic broke, and that isn’t about to change.

From deep cleans and fogging to touchpoint sanitation and decontamination, the professional cleaning industry has really stepped up its game to fight back against this invisible enemy. We know that our practices are thorough and robust, but in times of crisis, customers want reassurance that their premises are COVID-secure. So, to help give them

confidence in their hygiene provisions, it’s vital that we back up our claims.

This is where Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) testing comes in. ATP is the energy molecule found in all living things, making it the ideal indicator when trying to determine if a surface is clean or not. Using this method, small testing sticks are used to take a sample from a surface after it has been cleaned. It is then placed into a small handheld device and a reading is given within seconds, demonstrating the effectiveness of the sanitisation cleaning.

We recently launched our own ATP testing regime – SAFER – which involves five detailed processes:

• Swab of key touch points, risk areas and high traffic areas.

• Analysis of swab results using ATP technology.

• Formulation of tailored plan, methodology and cleaning regime based on the results.

• Execute the plan, with focused cleaning of areas showing higher biological residues.

• Repeat monitoring and adjustments for continuous improvements and to identify high risk areas.

The data and science-led insight that SAFER delivers ensures that daily cleaning and hygiene routines are enhanced according to need. Cleaning teams are able to identify bacteria ‘hot spots’ and build in additional measures to their processes. This not only allows them to prove cleanliness levels to customers, but also constantly improve their methods.

In a hygiene-conscious world, customers want to know that their premises are safe and COVID-secure. If we can deliver excellent cleans, and prove their efficacy with hard data, we can ease their concerns and give them the confidence to thrive once again.
