10 QUESTIONS WITH... ANDY JONES

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Andy Jones, General Manager at G&S Penrith Ltd.

Q6 Q7 Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was actually

working on the traps at a clay pigeon shoot. £5 per night, I thought it was great. My first full time job was as a field service engineer for a local hydraulics company. A company that I still have dealings with and taught me so much practically.

Q3 Q4 Q5

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I was working in the hydraulics industry getting some hands-on experience, after graduating with an engineering degree at university. After about three years I wanted to get into something a little ‘cleaner’.

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR

PERSONALITY? Cheerful, genuine and focused.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,

WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? Whistler in Canada, for the skiing.

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING

INDUSTRY? I’d like to remove the rogues that are damaging the industry’s reputation by supplying low quality products and services.

58 | 10 QUESTIONS

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Just be nice to everybody. You never know who you are talking to and when you might come across them again. If you can’t be nice, listen!

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD

YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I’d pay off my mortgage, buy a couple of nice cars, go somewhere exotic on holiday, and put the rest aside for my two children’s future. I’d still work as I get bored too easily sat doing nothing.

Q8 Q9

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE

ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Sir Doug Ellis, as I’m a big Aston Villa fan, Barack Obama because I respect what he has achieved, and my late grandfather – he always told a good story.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE

CLEANING INDUSTRY? The future is bright. People are looking for good quality products that do the job right, are durable and available quickly – something that we here at G&S believe strongly in. We have

also seen over the last 12 months that there are some really good innovative products coming onto the market, which says to me that the manufacturers also believe that the future is worth investing in.

Sylvie Giangolini,General Manager at Hako Machines Ltd, asks:

Q10

WHAT HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE

ON YOUR CAREER? I would have to say that it has to be the products that we sell. The manufacturers that we deal with, especially Suttner GmbH, are constantly evolving and innovating new products which we are then incorporated into our product lines. This keeps us on a constant path of continual improvement with regards to product knowledge, quality and the service that we provide to our customers. It's what keeps this job so interesting.
