WHAT’S NEW WEBER? Tracey Dempster, Head of Marketing, Saint-Gobain Weber
discusses the company’s successes with reference to a recent industrial project and a new comprehensive CPD module.
Product innovation is of paramount importance here at Weber. Solutions are developed in close co-operation with our customers, and our international R&D facilities, to guarantee quality, safety and competitiveness. Weber uses ‘discovery’ interview techniques with customers to understand their needs and challenges in order to help capture new and innovative ways of improving products and services. We can also utilise a cross functional Weber team, both sales and technical resources, to install the process as business-as- usual the Weber way.
We have strong relationships with a number of Weber Recommended Installers of our flooring systems and have subsequently built up a large portfolio of industrial and commercial floor screed project case studies. In a recent project our industrial floor screed was specified in the extensive refurbishment of a manufacturing unit at Kawneer UK Limited, Runcorn, Cheshire, a leading manufacturer of commercial construction and architectural aluminium systems. Here a new precision racking system was installed in an existing facility. Timelines were limited and substantial concrete sawing was required to install the precision rails into the existing concrete floor structure.
With the steel rails correctly installed the cut-out areas adjacent to the rails were repaired with webercem pyrapatch, the existing floor surface cleaned of old paint and sealer, and the whole area scabbled and cleaned. The floor was pre-treated and primed with weberfloor 4716 primer which is designed for use on all substrates prior to application of weberfloor products to achieve a thin but tight membrane. It regulates the porosity of the substrate and improves adhesion while reducing the formation of pinholes in the levelling layer. weberfloor 4610 industry top pumped floor screed was poured in sectioned bays to match the finished level of the rails. This project required 24 tonnes of weberfloor 4610 industry top to complete the 500m² area to the very highest standard and in the shortest possible time.
Originally, an alternative brand had been specified on this project which was proving unsuccessful. Weber was called in at short notice to review the job and together with Maintenance Supplies Contracts Limited, Macclesfield, the specification was changed to correctly level the floor. Weber offered both specification and technical support to the contractor and helped the customer to use the originally and inappropriately specified material in a different location of the factory.
In January 2018 Saint-Gobain Weber introduced their new CPD: ‘Introduction into Flowing Floor Screeds’.
This comprehensive CPD presentation covers many subjects from why and where to use floor systems; the attributes of commercial floors; design considerations; the demands of the finished floor that will have an influence on specification, through to renovation, fast-track construction and drying times.
New content has been designed into this CPD which we know is essential for architects, main contractors, interior designers and applicators. This includes quality control procedures; the benefits of cementitious screeds over traditional screeds; moisture consideration and acoustic flooring system solutions. We’ve also included an application video showing our weberfloor 4310 fibre flow pump-applied, fibre-reinforced smoothing compound as we know this is of essential interest to both designers and applicators.
British Standards are fully explained in the new Weber CPD and cover use and application of floor screeds; manufacturers’ test data and certification; compliance to an ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 quality system and workmanship on site which is covered by BS 800 part 9.
Now available in PowerPoint format, this one hour long RIBA- Assessed CPD can be presented by Weber’s Specification Team at your premises or at a Saint-Gobain facility or Technical Academy anywhere in the UK. This service is free of charge and available on request.
