The 2020 hangover

Jangro CEO, Joanne Gilliard, reflects on the past year and the positive outcomes that businesses can take into 2021 and beyond.

With the government promising an effective and safe vaccine early next year, many people are breathing a deep sigh of relief that this year is finally drawing to a close. It has been challenging for all sectors of society, the cleaning industry included.

However, as much as we’d love to forget about 2020 and the coronavirus, there will be consequences that will remain long after the pandemic eases. In fact, there are some quite positive outcomes, which businesses can harness to boost their success in 2021.

Much attention has certainly been given to the industry this year, as people recognise the importance of cleaning and hygiene, and importantly, their critical roles in infection prevention. Once an undervalued workforce, so often held in low regard, the coronavirus crisis raised the profile of these dedicated and skilled workers. Professional cleaning staff are responsible for maintaining clean and hygienic spaces for others to enjoy and this is crucial to an organisation’s commercial success.

After all, first impressions count. COVID-19 has forced people to become much more selective when choosing where to spend time, eat, relax, and shop. If they don’t feel an establishment is clean and safe, they will not attend, return, or recommend. This can damage the image and perception of an organisation, especially if the customer decides to air their dissatisfaction on social media.

Employers should therefore ensure that a frequent and thorough cleaning schedule continues to be implemented and that their cleaning staff have access to high quality and relevant training. Jangro offers an award-winning e-learning platform called the Learning Management Solution (LMS), which was recently accredited by the CPD Certification Service. A key benefit of the LMS is that it offers a flexible and contactless approach to training – particularly pertinent whilst we continue to practise social distancing.

28 | REGULAR Washing hands for a healthier future

One of the silver linings we must take from the pandemic is how many more people realise the link between good hand hygiene and health. This is a key infection prevention strategy, and we must not allow people to become complacent about handwashing once the crisis passes. Continuing to take hand hygiene seriously will not only help enhance a business’ reputation in the eyes of its customers and visitors, but will also improve the health of its employees – and therefore help increase productivity and lower levels of absenteeism.

Businesses should therefore seek to ensure that there are ample opportunities for hand hygiene, especially in high traffic areas, for example at the main entrance or exit to buildings, reception desks, and at points of sale.

Washroom facilities will also continue to be under scrutiny, and must be kept impeccably clean and hygienic. This not only means sparkling clean surfaces; it is also important that all equipment is in good working order and that dispensers do not run empty.

End user expectations of cleanliness and hygiene are higher than ever, and will remain so for quite some time. This is certainly something to celebrate; cleaning and hygiene should be a pre-requisite for any business, and whilst the spotlight is pointed in our direction, it gives the wonderful workers in the cleaning industry themselves an opportunity to shine.

Last, but not least, thank you to all of the aforementioned for their hard work to keep spaces clean and hygienic during what can only be described as a hugely challenging year. Here’s to a healthier 2021!
