CRITICISM FOR BUSINESSES REFUSING ROYAL WEDDING HOLIDAY

The GMB union has criticised employers for refusing to give their staff the royal wedding day as an additional holiday.

The union has "named and shamed" two companies that consider 29th

April 2011, the

day of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding, as a normal working day.

These employers are the Lancashire flooring firm

Interfloor, which has 400 staff, and concrete product manufacturer CPM, which employs 330 people.

Even though the Government has declared the royal wedding date as a bank holiday, there is no statutory necessity under employment law to guarantee staff time off for bank and public holidays, because they must abide by their employment contracts.

NWFA FOUNDER HAS DIED, AGED 93

The founder of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) has passed away at that age of 93.

Virgil Hendricks died on 19th February, only a day after celebrating his birthday.

A true member of the flooring family, not only did

Hendricks found the NWFA in 1985, but he was also a former owner of Lockwood Flooring Company, trustee for Local 1310 Floor Layers, a member of the Home Builders Asociation and he was the first president of the Flooring Industry Council.

‘PLENTY OF WORK’ FOR FREELANCE BUILDERS

Hudson Contract, the UK’s largest payroll company for freelance builders who are registered under HMRC’s Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) received contracts for 1,245 new operatives in the space of just nineteen working days in January.

Says the firm’s Managing Director, David Jackson: “The construction industry is living through its fourth consecutive year of falling workloads. Around 2,500 building firms went into administration last year, and the Federation of Master Builders has just warned the recent VAT increase will mean the loss of a further 7,500 jobs in construction in the months to come.

“However, against the backdrop of ongoing job losses amongst the employed workforce,

there is a definite trend of increased momentum in construction’s freelance sector. There are plenty of contractors who are absolutely delighted to be able to offer such work as their order books permit – they understand the commercial advantages of tapping into a pool of self-employed expertise. Utilising the skills of freelance builders enables contractors to be more cost-competitive, and gives them the vital flexibility they need.”

Hudson Contract is reporting a 33% leap in turnover in just nine months, with a corresponding increase in the number of contractors using their service and the number of freelance builders being contracted and paid.
