but also sustainability for all concerned including the client, the people attending the event and the area it is located in.

The standard does not even specify which sustainability issues to manage or what performance levels to achieve. What the standard requires is that an organisation has in place ‘a transparent process through which it systematically evaluates the issues relevant to its operations’ and sets its own objectives and targets for improvement.

For us at Ryans Cleaning, it means that outdoor events with thousands of people attending such as the V Festivals or Download events should be approached with all due care to the environment including the local area, the people who may live nearby including residents and the businesses who may rely on the area.

the initial learning curve was around what the term ‘sustainability’ actually means in practice. And how does it apply to us in this industry?

The point here is that sustainability is not just about being “green” and more environmentally responsible, it is more than that. We would say that sustainability is more about how an organisation continues to run its activities through its values.

Yes, we are running a commercially viable business but in a way that contributes to the areas we work in, whilst reducing its impact on the environment.

Indeed, it became apparent that focusing on environmental issues alone would not be enough.

Once we started work on it, we realised that ISO 20121 is a framework rather than a solution in its own right. It is more of a way of working and, by doing so, ensuring success

We are proud of our achievement. According to Certification Europe, it also means that this new standard makes us the only private company in Europe to hold all four certificates, with others including ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems, ISO14001 Environmental Management System and OHSAS 18001 for Occupational Health and Safety.

For our customers and suppliers, it also means benefits. They can also see the value in our approach and new processes as we work in close collaboration to shared goals and objectives.

Internally, it has also been a great motivating force, confirming that we are heading in the right direction. All of our staff are part of what we now call ‘the structured process’ and are committed to them. That’s the true measure of the standard for us.
