Carpets need regular, specifi c care to ensure they look good for as long as possible. Rob McInally, Sales Director for Industrial Cleaning Equipment (ICE), shares some carpet maintenance tips, and introduces an innovative new vacuum that’s ideal for large areas of fl ooring.

Companies invest considerable amounts of time and money in choosing and installing the appropriate flooring for their particular needs, and although trends come and go, carpets will always be popular. Carpeting offers a myriad of different options when it comes to colour and pattern, allowing organisations to be more creative in terms of interior design. Less noisy than hard floors, it can also ensure that any sound disturbance is kept to a minimum, especially between floors in multi-level buildings or office blocks.

Good quality carpeting can constitute a significant financial investment for companies, but this investment should not end once the carpet has been laid. To preserve its appearance, prolong its life, and give a better return on your initial expenditure, it is in your best interests to make sure that regular cleaning and maintenance routines are in place. Whether your carpets are made from natural or man-made fibres, patterned or plain in terms of colour and texture, there are a number of steps you can take to keep them looking good.

The vital role of vacuuming Carpets are subjected to some tough treatment, especially in high traffic areas such as busy offices, conference venues and hotels. Soil, dirt and gritty particles can quickly build up, and these can cause damage to carpet fibres. ‘Traffic lane grey’ is a phrase sometimes used to describe the visual signs of wear and tear, where people regularly walk a particular route to get to a certain place. Some of this can be alleviated by installing door mats around entrances to trap the dirt before people enter your building. Rearranging the furniture, if it’s possible, will vary the walking space, taking pressure off certain areas of carpeting.

Vacuums that are light and manoeuvrable, whether they are cylinder or upright models, will be easier to transport between floors or buildings, making life easier for cleaning operatives. If your cleaning team have large expanses of wall- to-wall carpeting to clean, dividing the floor space into quadrants and vacuuming each one, before moving onto the next section, can be the most efficient way to tackle the job. Going over each section of carpet several times, working slowly to allow the suction to remove all the ground-in dirt and dust is essential.

Italian flair and care for

UK carpets ICE is passionate about bringing new innovations to the UK floor cleaning sector, and the LS 50 Hybrid Battery Wide Vac is the newest addition to the portfolio.

The LS50, which is 100% designed and constructed in Italy, has a wide reach, making it perfect for cleaning large areas such as conference venues, hotels, sports halls, schools, airports, railway stations and shopping centres, with the capacity to clean 16,000 sq.ft. per hour. Although it has the ability to clean large areas it is also manoeuvrable and light, allowing operatives to guide it with the minimum of effort. Its wide body frame rotation enables it to clean under hard to reach areas such as desks or tables, and be transported to different locations easily and quickly. Its low noise levels also mean that cleaning can be carried out unobtrusively, an important benefit if cleaning is to be carried out in the daytime in locations where events, seminars or conference are taking place.

The brush roller and suction nozzle, which is self-adjusting, are quick and easy to change, without the need for tools, enabling the LS50 to operate on any type of carpet. Once the 1.5 hour battery life has been used the 15 metre power cable allows continuous use in the traditional manner. In addition, the LS50 can also dry clean carpets.

Caring for your carpets, whether large or small, will ensure that they retain their looks and functionality for a long time. The right cleaning machines and regimes will help to make this happen, and save money in the long run. Maintenance is much cheaper, and less disruptive, than replacement, so by giving your carpets the red carpet treatment; they should remain viable for years to come.
