Meet with your favourites, and hire accordingly.
If it’s a larger job then speaking to past clients is crucial.

The communication element can be the trickiest to get right as assumptions on either end can be wildly different. Make it clear how often you expect to meet (virtually or real world), and how often you want to receive updates via email. With freelancers I often ask for a weekly status update and a quarterly call.
