COVID-19 sounds like a good name for an eCommerce project, sadly the pandemic has caused a lot more destruction to my life over the last few months than any digital transformation project that I’ve been involved with in the last 20 years.

believe it was the middle of March that my then employers office was closing


and we were all asked to work from home for the foreseeable future, like many of you. Having only been in the company a short time, leading a complete redesign and re- platforming project (not called COVID-19) from Magento 1 to Magento 2 with a planned go live date of 25th June, it was all hands on deck to meet the deadline. All hands being an internal team of 3, an outsourced consultant (very experienced project manager) and third party resources from a design agency and SI partner.


We had already set out the project, timelines and ways of working and continued our daily stand ups however albeit no longer now face to face but through zoom calls, the project was on track and we had made great progress designing the critical pages and functionality, we had a good first draft content strategy and started the integration of new technology partners that I had selected and negotiated terms with, from a new online payment gateway, eMail service provider with advanced on- site and CRM functionality to a reviews and ratings

platform, A/B testing and behaviour monitoring technology to understand more about visitors and potential customers and the pain points to fix in the future.


All going well with glowing references from my then CEO. Fast forward to the 20th April and I started to feel unwell, however, in true British stubbornness, I brushed it off with a 7am training run as I was still training for the London Marathon helping to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.


For the following 9 days I continued to feel unwell with my symptoms getting worse, however, I needed to work longer hours as I was interviewing for a new team and had a project to keep on track with deadlines, not wanting to let anyone down.


29th April I received a message from my CEO to say what a great job I was doing and that he’s happy to be sharing the journey with me, an offer of shares in the business now on the table!
