Laboratory Products 13 Combined Seating and Storage for Optimised Changing Room Space

Hygienic furniture specialist Teknomek has launched compact step over seating benches intended to make the most of the space available in smaller changing rooms. The S-clad design builds in shoe compartments on both the unit for the ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ sides of the room. This ensures further valuable space does not have to be expended on shoe storage for external and internal footwear.

Sue Springett, Commercial Manager at Teknomek, said: “Space is often at a premium in changing rooms, as choke points these represent a risk area when it comes to maintaining social distancing. As such, it’s in the best interests of businesses to make the most of the floor space available by reducing down the amount of furniture in the room as far as possible.

“The intelligent design of the S-clad seating benches helps solve this problem by integrating shoe storage and seating into a single item of furniture.”

The new benches are available in widths from 1000mm with a dedicated shelf for the clean and dirty sides. Customers can opt for 304-grade fully welded stainless steel as standard or choose 316-grade for additional corrosion resistance in line with their standard clean down procedures. Easy clean features include 50mm floor clearance for ease of access beneath the unit. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/0dwD

How clean is your cleanroom?

As well as the big topics of the ventilation and air circulation, energy management and the gowning selection and process, there are a multitude of smaller factors to consider when designing a cleanroom, that keep your space as safe as possible.

Go with the fl ow

The way furniture is designed and positioned can have a massive impact on air circulation, hindering or assisting the fl ow which is so important for your risk management. A workbench or storage unit with a solid back under shelf immediately creates a barrier for ventilation. However, by incorporating a multi- bar or perforated shelf, particles are more able to disperse safely to mitigate risk. Ensuring that there is suffi cient space around equipment so that air does not stagnate is something that should always be considered.

Minimise risk from poor design

Poorly designed furniture creates harbourage points in which microbes thrive; gravity-defying bacteria will take over a hidden ledge in no time: growing, fl ourishing, and potentially doubling every 10 minutes. Ensure your furniture has minimal fl at surfaces and no hidden ledges to minimise risk of a microbe alert as far as possible.

Whilst in a perfect world all harbourage points are avoided altogether; effective, effi cient cleaning remains business critical. Being vigilant when specifying cleanroom furniture by seeking expert advice on the safest equipment which will cope with regular, intensive cleaning will provide a better return on investment.

Cleaning care considerations

By working backwards from your disinfection and sterilisation routine, you’ll select furniture which facilitates the clean down process of your clean room. Whether it’s the manoeuvrability or having enough space for effective mopping, consulting the hygiene teams can reveal insights which save time and / or improve their effectiveness.

The right standard of furniture will pay for itself over time by factoring out risk points and unnecessary design features that will extend cleaning times.
