12 New Technology to Increase Process Understanding

B&W Tek has introduced the PTRam™, a self-calibrating portable Raman system for process development applications. The 19-inch rack-mountable system features a 785 nm laser with long-term stability together with high-throughput optics. PTRam operates with Vison software, Metrohm’s proven spectroscopic software for real- time analysis, which includes instrument control and data analysis. The PTRam is self-monitoring, with self-calibration and system performance validation tests automated in the Vision software to ensure the validity of each measurement. The system testing provides a complete instrumental status diagnosis, including Raman shift accuracy and photometric precision as set forth in USP <858>.

The PTRam can aid in product and process development efforts in the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries through the ability to increase process understanding with information-rich Raman spectral data. Predictive quantitative models can be created, or trend monitoring can be performed to reduce calibration development time before full process definition. The PTRam is a valuable analytical tool for reaction monitoring and kinetic studies, blending and mixing, fermentation monitoring, solvent exchange, tablet coating monitoring, and other processes for real-time understanding of chemical and morphological changes as they occur. B&W Tek offers a full line of sampling probes and other accessories to optimise measurement for the systems being studied.

New Evaporator Series Accelerates Drug Discovery Research

The new SP Genevac EZ-2 4.0 Benchtop Evaporator series from SP Industries (SP) provides fast, safe and environmentally- friendly removal of all commonly used solvents and acids. This versatile instrument is capable of drying, concentrating, lyophilising - to a ‘fluffy’ powder - and even producing crystals. The new EZ-2 4.0 centrifugal evaporator makes evaporation effortless, even for the less experienced user, without any specialised training.

Introducing Three New Laboratory Scale Mixers

Laboratories can now benefit from a new range of laboratory scale mixers incorporating the latest developments in design and manufacturing technology.

The three new Laboratory scale mixers, launched by Silverson Machines, include a laboratory scale version of the Silverson Flashmix Powder/Liquid mixer.

The FMX5 is suitable for small scale manufacturing and R&D work with a typical batch size of up to 10 litres, depending on viscosity. The mixer offers an accurate means of predicting the performance of the production scale Flashmix, making the scale-up process a simple task.

The FMX5 offers proven performance on a wide range of powders including gums (CMC, Guar, Gum Arabic, Pectin, Xanthan), sugars, flours, milk powder, Carbopol, Bentonite and many others across a range of industries. The introduction of this new Powder/Liquid mixer to the Silverson product ranges opens up the possibility of many more applications than were previously possible at laboratory scale.

For higher viscosity mixing at a laboratory scale Silverson has developed the Verso-HV, a pilot scale In-Line mixer which matches the capabilities of the production scale Silverson HV In-Line mixers. The Verso-HV incorporates a unique and innovative “pumping rotor” design that substantially increases its self- pumping capacity, ideal for processing higher viscosity products.

As well as being ideal for R&D and small scale production, the Verso-HV facilitates easy scale up to Silverson’s production scale UHS-HV Series In-Line mixers as it is built to the same fine tolerances.

The Verso UHS is an Ultra-Hygienic version of the standard machine, allowing it to be used for stringent applications in the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industries as well as Food, Cosmetics and other clean industries.

The Verso UHS is manufactured with Silverson-designed hygienic single mechanical shaft seals, which can be converted to hygienic double mechanical shaft seals. It has a crevice-free construction and is designed for Cleaning-In- Place (CIP) and Sterilise-In-Place (SIP) operation. UHS-specification versions of the FMX5 and the Verso-HV are also available.

All three new mixer options can be supplied with a Vessel Package, comprising of a 20 litre stainless steel vessel, vessel stand, valve and pipework. Conversion kits are also available allowing the standard Verso to be upgraded to a Verso-HV and an FMX5, allowing even further flexibility within this new series of mixers.

The redesigned EZ-2 series is based on decades of advanced expertise in evaporation science and feedback from bench scientists. To support high performance and routine use, the chemically resistant, glass SpeedTrap™ condenser jar is now located at the front for easy visibility, and simple removal and replacement. The new intuitive touchscreen interface enables ‘press-and-go’ operation with at-a-glance monitoring of operational parameters, more pre-set methods for frequently used protocols, a methods guide, and recording of all run data. New high power lamps and software improvements enhance overall performance for faster evaporation rates.

Offering greater versatility for additional applications, the EXALT technology allows crystallisation studies such as polymorph screening to be conducted with ease. In addition, by preventing any vapour from escaping, the SpeedTrap means the EZ-2 4.0 can be used even without a fume hood, so this highly compact system can be readily located anywhere within a laboratory.

The EZ-2 4.0 has also been redesigned to minimise its environmental impact, with low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant, a standby mode to help save energy, and reduced use of plastic throughout.

Three low maintenance models, with HCl compatible and IGP (Inert Gas Purge) options, ensure that any solvent and application can be accommodated. The EZ-2 Standard is ideal for solvents with boiling points up to 120°C. The EZ-2 Plus or Elite are used for those with boiling points between 120°C and 165°C. The EZ-2 Elite is also optimised to work with difficult solvents with boiling points above 165°C, like DMSO and NMP. It also features an external low maintenance, dry scroll pump for an even deeper vacuum that, combined with its auto defrost and draining condenser, enables fast lyophilisation of HPLC fractions.

Built in patented technologies include SP’s Dri-Pure® sample

protection system; advanced temperature control technology; as well as the ability to accommodate a wide range of sample holders for all sample types
