Laboratory Products 19 Microwave Assisted Extraction of Pesticides from Environmental Samples

Pesticides are extensively used in modern agriculture and many governments require their analysis in environmental samples. In addition some pesticides belong to the class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The manufacture, sale and use of products containing POPs in the UK is banned however some might be present through unintentional trace contamination.

The analysis of pesticides is described in EPA 3546 that outlines the procedure for extracting water insoluble or slightly water-soluble organic compounds from soils, clays, sediments, sludges, and solid wastes. EPA 3546 is also a specific method for Microwave Assisted Solvent Extraction (MASE), a well established sample preparation technique that enables extractions with reduced solvent volume and time.

A new Milestone application report from Analytix presents a guideline for the extraction of the priority pesticides from both standard reference materials and spiked materials using the official method EPA 3546. The Milestone ETHOS X microwave extraction system equipped with FastEX-24 rotor was used in this study to prove its efficacy in the extraction of pesticides from environmental matrices

The application report describes the extraction of target compounds in 40 minutes from 24 soil samples simultaneously with 30 g of sample per vessel. Full recovery data is included and demonstrates that the potential problems of contamination, memory effects, and cleaning are eliminated due to the use of disposable glass vials.

The FastEX-24 rotor uses disposable glass vials with contactless temperature control in all positions. This makes the system a unique and innovative solution for the extraction of contaminants from soils, providing unmatched ease of use and low running costs.

Mecmesin, a world leader in the design and manufacture of force and materials testing equipment, has launched a new microsite showcasing their range of texture measurement and analysis products.

Mecmesin has extensive experience in practical food texture measurement and provides texture analysis systems for field, factory and laboratory test environments. The company offers of a wide range of instruments to measure attributes, which consumers experience in a sensory manner to judge product quality – primarily mouthfeel and touch.

The microsite is a resource for food technologists and quality control personnel and those in the research, development and educational fields seeking to apply a scientific approach to testing their products and ingredients.

The microsite provides visitors with an easy-to-navigate, simple structure in order to quickly locate points of interest. Visitors to the site can now locate information relevant to their industry, including test methods and case studies. This focus means food technologists and quality control personnel can easily assess how best to test their particular products and ingredients.

The main areas cover: texture analysers, fixtures and accessories; industry-related applications (bakery, confectionery, dairy, fruit & vegetables, gels & hydrocolloids, grains & snacks, meat & fish, plus sectors such as cosmetics, pet food & animal feed, pharmaceuticals and education and research); test methods (bulk analysis, compression, extrusion, penetration, shear, snap, bend and break and tension).

The microsite also implements responsive web design for an improved user experience that is equally accessible across mobile, tablet and desktop browsing devices.

Mecmesins’ Managing Director, John Page, commented: “This new microsite focuses on the needs of the food manufacturing and processing industry, offering customers flexible and cost effective solutions to their texture measurement challenges.”

Handy Homogeniser for Cannabis Sample Preparation

The Chromatrap Spin Column Homogeniser from Porvair Sciences is gaining considerable interest from organisations preparing Cannabis samples for analysis of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).

The ratio of THC and CBD is crucial for differentiating medicinal versus recreational cannabis. This ratio is important for taxation authorities, medical regulators and growers alike. Accurate THC/CBD determination relies on effective sample preparation from samples of cannabis leaf, bud and flower.

Offering a gentle, quick and clean alternative to mechanical syringe and needle homogenisation, the Chromatrap Spin Column Homogeniser quickly and efficiently homogenises cells, tissue lysates and plant extracts in a single step. Porvair’s unique proprietary bio-shredding Vyon® polymer advantageously reduces lysate viscosity and captures insoluble debris by centrifugation.

Used in conjunction with the Porvair Plant and Seed Genomics microplate the Chromatrap Spin Column Homogeniser provides efficient sample preparation clean-up and Cannabis THC/CBD analysis set-up.
