2 February / March 2021 Foreword
Welcome to a brand new year at Chromatography Today and the first edition of 2021, again produced under the challenging circumstances surrounding the continuing Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and a continuing lockdown.
Trevor Hopkins - Editor
I hope you are all safe, well and in good spirits as the situation continues to challenge all around the globe with new variants appearing in multiple locations. A glimmer of hope on the horizon is the rise in the number of individuals being immunised with over 140 million doses having been administered against COVID-19 as of early February.
The planned focus areas within the two themes of Fundamental Aspects of Chromatography and Modern Chromatography Applications for this edition were ‘Ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS)’ and ‘Ultrafast separations in Pharma/Drug Discovery’ respectively.
The Fundamental Aspects of Chromatography and Modern Chromatography Applications sections are designed to provide you with both recent advances in the fundamentals of separation science, method development and new instrumentation along with modern cutting edge and practical applications of analytical separation. The topics are separated by the Chromatography Today Knowledgebase which covers Gas Chromatography troubleshooting and in Part I of a two part series peak shape issues are reviewed and an off topic article from Astra Zeneca covering the leveraging of ion chromatography-mass spectrometry for the impurity analysis of a small organic acid.
In the Ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) focus area, we present an article by MOBILion on advancing effective glycan analysis using IM-MS. This article is followed by articles from Waters and Excellims explaining how the coupling of ultra-performance liquid chromatography with ion mobility mass spectrometry (UPLC- IM-MS) has been used to overcome the challenges around sample complexity and delivering the power of IM-MS to the point of analysis, respectively. The last article from SCIEX for the IM-MS section is a good bridge between the two focus areas in this issue by covering not only IM-MS but also extremely fast analyses employing a novel sample introduction method. The articles following the KnowledgeBase and Astra Zeneca articles includes articles covering the Ultrafast separations in Pharma/
Drug Discovery focus area and are from Jim Grinias et. al. from Rowan University in New Jersey, USA , Waters and YMC and cover the considerations for sample injection in high throughput, high speed separations, how a new technology has been developed to mitigate interactions with the metal components of HPLC systems and columns respectively and resulting in faster analysis times for metal-sensitive analytes and the use of smaller and novel particle technology for the rapid analysis of biomolecules, respectively.
The next issue of Chromatography Today will be focusing on the latest applications in Comprehensive Multidimensional Chromatography (GCxGC, LCxLC and LCxLCxLC) and The different modes of Electrophoretic separation - (CE, ITP, CEC, PAGE, etc.)
Each edition of Chromatography Today is packed with valuable information; however, it is impossible to include everything that is submitted. The new revised Chromatography Today website (www.
chromatographytoday.com) is the repository where all the other submissions can be found, along with the latest news from the world of separation science and access to all the historical articles. Perusing the trending news and article sections, it is surprising how separation science plays a significant part in daily life without us ever appreciating it, or even realising it. There is a diverse range of areas highlighting just how important separation science is to society with a calendar of events and articles on food, biofuels, medicine, forensics, brewing and environmental clean-up. Please take a look and if you are not a current recipient of the Chromatography Today ebulletin - please sign up today.
As always, we welcome article submissions, topic ideas for inclusion in future issues and feedback from our readership. If you have any feedback on this edition of Chromatography Today, please contact us as we are always looking to improve the publication.
