6 Water / Wastewater Water level monitoring data with global cellular connectivity
Solinst Canada Ltd. have announced a partnership with CityKinect that enables global cellular connectivity to their Model 9500 4G LevelSender 5 Telemetry Systems. The LevelSender 5 offers a very simple and inexpensive means to collect water level data from remote Solinst dataloggers.
Solinst now offers the option of a CityKinect SIM card that is activated and preinstalled before shipping. This allows a low-cost, competitive data-only plan, managed, and billed directly through Solinst. The LevelSender 5 is set up in advance, simplifying the programming and installation process, providing a plug and play solution for remote water level monitoring.
The SIM Card gives you access to wider network coverage, as it scans multiple service providers automatically selecting the strongest signal for your location. This allows you to avoid costs and frustrations with traditional single carrier providers, and not worry which network has better coverage where you deploy your LevelSender 5.
“Reducing the challenges of getting good sensor data has always been a priority at Solinst,” said Jim Pianosi, President of Solinst. “Now with an integrated offering including global cellular connectivity, it’s easier than ever before for customers to deploy and not worry about coverage at site. It just works.”
The collaboration brings together high-quality water level dataloggers with reliable and secure cellular technology to ensure customers have a world-class telemetry solution. Solinst is a high-quality groundwater and surface water monitoring instrumentation manufacturer and CityKinect is a cellular connectivity provider focused on helping manufacturers integrate cellular into their offerings. Shaun Connor, CEO of CityKinect, said “Solinst has been fantastic to work with, and really understands their customers’ needs. By taking this step together we are enthusiastic about growing both companies in the Environmental Monitoring space”.

57976pr@reply-direct.com New technology for water quality monitoring receives prestigious award
A water monitoring system developed in a collaboration between University of Birmingham researchers and Proteus Instruments, that remotely measures the quality of water in rivers, lakes and reservoirs, has resulted in a Queens Award for Enterprise (Innovation) for the company. The technology resulted from a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with researchers Kieran Khamis, Chris Bradley and David Hannah from the university’s School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and has a wide range of applications in the water quality, environmental, leisure and fi shing sectors.
It resulted in the Proteus multiprobe, which is manufactured and distributed by Proteus Instruments, a trading division of RS Hydro Ltd, and the recipient of the Queen’s Award.
The probe provides real-time data on the levels of dissolved oxygen, organic carbon and detects bacterial contamination, to provide continuous monitoring of the health of water systems, their ability to support aquatic life, and their safety for leisure use.

The multiprobe can also be programmed to deliver other measurements of water quality such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), or the amount of dissolved oxygen taken up when organic matter breaks down in water. This parameter, which has previously only been measurable by a 5-day laboratory test, is vital to ensure that wastewater can be discharged into water systems without the risk of harming aquatic life.
The Proteus multiprobe is expected to change the way water quality is monitored. It has the same level of accuracy as laboratory testing, and delivers data in real-time, so can provide continuous monitoring. It is also robust and low-maintenance, meaning it can operate in even the harshest and most remote environments
The probe has already been installed in locations around the world including the River Ganges, the Chicago River, and Swansea Docks, and the company, which is already working with water companies, environmental regulators, and NGOs including the World Bank, is confi dent of a high demand for this new technology,
Rob Stevens, Managing Director of Proteus Instruments, commented: “The Proteus multiprobe is a highly disruptive technology that is poised to change practice in water quality monitoring. Our current installations have shown that the multiprobe is an effective, effi cient, and immediate way to measure parameters such as BOD or the presence of coliform bacteria, which indicate the potential presence of disease-causing bacteria in water.
The team is extremely proud to be awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation. We are one of only 51 organisations in the UK to receive this award, which is the highest accolade for any UK business.”
In addition to dissolved oxygen, organic carbon, coliform bacteria and BOD, the multiprobe can also be programmed to detect and measure water pressure, pH, temperature, salinity, turbidity, pollutants including chloride, optical brighteners, nitrate, tryptophan, crude and refi ned oils, ammonium, and chemical processes that use oxygen in water. The PRO range builds on the success of the Aquaprobe and Aquasonde series, elevating every aspect of the construction, design, features and specifi cations. They bring with them new-to-industry materials allowing measurement at far greater depths, a unique measurement chamber for improved sensor stability in the most demanding applications and smart sensors that hold their calibration data, allowing for simple sensor exchange in the fi eld.
For More Info, email: email:
Both the Aquaprobe (AP) and Aquasonde (AS) models of the PRO range feature a combination of titanium and carbon fi bre, offering both exceptional corrosion resistance and high compressive strength. As a result, both are capable of measuring at extreme depths of up to 1000ft (300m).
The protective end cap, found on all Aquaprobes, has been extended along the inside of the sleeve. When screwed onto the sleeve it creates a more stable measurement chamber for all installed sensors. Its matt black design prevents refl ection and the sealed environment is not subject to interference from stray light.
The measurement chamber can also be used for sensor calibration using the calibration cup that push-fi ts to the base of the probe. This surrounds and seals the holes and allows the probe to stand upright. Utilising the measurement chamber for calibration in this way reduces the volume of calibration solution required, reducing maintenance costs.
The range sees the introduction of smart sensors, sensors that hold calibration data allowing exchange without the need to recalibrate. Sensors can be carefully calibrated in the lab

and taken to the deployment site for simple exchange, removing the need to calibrate in the fi eld.
The PRO range come complete with all the key water quality smart sensors as standard and is equipped with a self-cleaning system to keep them clean for prolonged monitoring. Standard sensors include optical dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, ORP, temperature and depth.
Four Auxiliary ports allow extra smart sensors to be installed, diversifying monitoring options.
The AS-PRO is fi tted with a novel three- position switch ring mechanism allowing you to confi dently switch the function of the sonde. Using the switch ring you can turn the unit off, set it to auto or activate Bluetooth mode. The switch ring includes multi-coloured LED for various indications.
When in Auto mode the sonde will detect if its connector has been blanked off, if it’s connected to a vented cable, if it’s connected to an Aquameter or if it’s connected to a PC via USB, and reacts accordingly.
When set to Bluetooth mode, using the SondeLink App, the user can take live data readings, calibrate the Sonde, set-up the logging regime, check battery and memory levels and upload logged data from the Sonde to the PC.
