26 Air Monitoring Modbus RTU enhances communication in sample conditioning systems

When extracting sample gas from the process, process-related impurities such as particles or moisture are inevitably also extracted. These can affect the measurement results or damage the measuring cells. The sample gas must therefore be prepared before it enters the analyser. To remove moisture, the gas temperature in the sample gas cooler is lowered below the dew point. The resulting condensate is discharged.

Bühler Technologies offer the TC range of coolers that lower gas temperatures, which are controlled by a microprocessor. Falling below or exceeding the set warning range (for example: after switching on) is signalled both LEDs’ fl ashing and via the status relay. The status output can be used to control the sample gas pump to enable the gas fl ow to be switched on only when the permissible cooling range is reached. By connecting a humidity sensor, the controller can be expanded to monitor condensate.

Until now, the measured cooling block temperature could be transmitted via an analogue 4 - 20 mA signal. As digitisation continues to advance rapidly, Bühler Technologies GmbH will make the more advanced Modbus RTU communication protocol available as an option for all sample gas coolers with semiconductor cooling elements. This digital interface represents a step forward in communication capabilities and the control system provides extended information about the sample gas cooler.

With the option of the Modbus RTU digital interface, the user now has direct access to the process and diagnostic data, for example the current cooling block temperature or information about a possible temperature error if this is outside the target range. If a humidity sensor is connected, it is possible to determine a moisture breakthrough directly from the control station. All settings that could previously be made via the menu on the display of the sample gas cooler can now be made remotely from the control room and directly during operation. The condensate pumps can be activated and deactivated as necessary, the setpoint of the cooling block temperature can be adjusted and the alarm thresholds can also be set remotely. These coolers also enable the operator to determine the output of the cooler’s usage (in %), which is useful for evaluating the unit’s performance limit, and the output of the device runtime, which can be used to implement maintenance intervals.

Modbus RTU is a very robust interface which enables remote access to the sample gas cooler from Bühler Technologies GmbH to control and monitor its status. Robust and reliable communication between fi eld devices and the control system therefore supports secure and continuous process and plant operation.

The TC Double, Double +, MIDI (pictured), MIDI +, MINI, Standard and Standard + models as well as Bühler’s RC 1.1 and RC 1.2 sample gas coolers are available with Modbus RTU. For More Info, email:

The Vortex3 is the most innovative high fl ow pump on the market, designed to simplify asbestos and air sampling. The high fl ow pump offers a fl ow accuracy better than +/-5%, ensuring confi dence in results.

Using Casella’s patent-pending, interlocking design, the Vortex3 has a comfortable handle and weighs just 2.17kg, allowing users to carry multiple units in one hand. This is a completely unique and new feature on the market, meaning asbestos clearance professionals save time and effort when taking pumps onto sites.

The Vortex3 has an IP65 rating, providing protection from dust and water ingress. Casella’s ergonomic design has ensured the high fl ow pump’s smooth body fi nish is free from small crevices that could hold fi ne airborne asbestos fi bres, allowing for safer decontamination and cleaning.

The Vortex3’s two-and-a-half-hour runtime at 12L/min with a typical fi lter ensures continuous performance. Available in two versions, the Vortex3 Pro model is compatible with Casella’s innovative Airwave App and Bluetooth connectivity, enabling users to remotely start, pause or stop a measurement run, monitor battery life and memory capacity and check measurement progress direct from a mobile device as well as allowing data from the pump to be emailed for additional traceability.

Precise laboratory and onsite quantifi cation of formaldehyde

Formaldehyde’s adverse effects on human health are well documented; it is an irritant to eyes, nose, throat and skin, while high levels of exposure can increase the risk of cancer. Formaldehyde is ubiquitous to car interiors where levels are regularly higher than WHO recommendations. A report by INERIS (French National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks) set a target of 30 ppb from 2015 – to be reduced in 2023 down to 10 ppb.

The EU’s 2019/983 Directive set short term exposure limits of 15 minutes or more at 0.6 ppm and 0.3 ppm for exposure for up to 8 hours. Industrial and construction fi rms working regularly with formaldehyde have therefore needed to ensure that they have taken the necessary steps to monitor and control this insidious chemical. Chromatotec have several solutions for analysing formaldehyde levels in both indoor and outdoor air.

Chromatotec’s airmo HCHO is a GC-FID based online formaldehyde, methanol and acetaldehyde analyser ubiquitous to solvent distillation processes and composite materials production facilities. Nitrogen and hydrogen generators are included with the airmo HCHO – so all that is required is a power supply to ensure precise, around- the-clock analysis. This rugged and reliable analyser, , unhindered by interferents and providing excellent linearity, monitors formaldehyde, methanol and acetaldehyde at levels of 0-100 ppb – with the data validated by a calibration standard within the device.

Chromatotec also offer a portable and com pact microfl uidic formaldehyde analyser which can operate autonomously for 2 hours and provide detection levels down to 1 ppb – onsite measurements, with laboratory precision. This device can analyse DNPH ( 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine) cartridges by extracting aldehydes from within. This unit is highly portable and is provided with a sturdy carrying case along with a battery-charger, sampling pipes and eluents, and weighs in at only 6.5 kg.

Chromatotec’s HPLC system can be used both onsite and, in the lab, and provides operators with aldehyde quantifi cation at ppt levels with excellent linearity up to high ppb levels. This device features a C18 column and UV detector and is a highly precise devise that requires solvents and to be operated by trained personnel. This analyser also includes a sampling unit with DNPH cartridges enabling the user to trap trace levels of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, carry out ultra-trace level analysis down to ppt in the laboratory or onsite.
