Combustion Analysers for TOC Analysis of Solid Materials The TOC (total organic carbon) content is an important parameter to characterise
materials like soil, rocks or cement. It can be determined by controlled combustion at a fixed temperature, by application of a temperature ramp or by adding acid. ELTRA (Germany) offers high-performance combustion analysers for all these methods.
The CW-800 and CW-800M are suitable for the determination of both TOC and TIC (total inorganic carbon) content in one sample by application of different carrier gases and temperatures. The CW-800M is used for applications with temperature ramps.
Due to their robust construction the combustion analyzers CS-800, CS-580 and CS-580A are suitable for measuring acidulated samples. They operate with gold cuvettes which replace the costly halogen traps. The use of sample loaders facilitates the handling of larger sample series.
Phenomenex, Inc. (USA), announces the addition of Phenova Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) – a comprehensive line of ISO/IEC 17025- and ISO Guide 34-compliant standards for the calibration of analytical equipment and quantitation of analytical measurements for environmental testing.
Sold and distributed exclusively by Phenomenex, Phenova CRMs are manufactured by Phenova, Inc., an established environmental proficiency-testing (PT) provider. Phenova brings the same precision to its CRM manufacturing process, underlined with the same methodical quality commitment that has been proven successful in manufacturing PT standards.
“Analysts depend on CRM performance to quantitate and qualify their results,” explains Sassan Tamaddoni, brand manager for Phenomenex. “Extreme accuracy is essential and the laboratory and PT manufacturing experience of Phenova’s chemists play a critical role in delivering consistent quality and reliability to our customers.”
Additionally, Phenova CRMs deliver lot-to-lot consistency with the verification of each lot to both internal and independent CRM materials. This ultimately provides a competitive product that allows customers to extend their initial calibrations and increase throughput between calibration events.
As the distributor, Phenomenex has implemented a series of added benefits to fortify the company’s entry into the CRM market such as a free sample program, multiple lot inventory, a dedicated technical support team, and a novel packaging configuration that delivers on safety, unique labeling, and organisation.
Phenova CRMs complement Phenomenex’s portfolio of GC and LC products and accessories specialised for the environmental industry and are currently available in the USA and Canada.

New GC-MS Runs Both Single and Triple Quadrupole Methods Using Familiar Software
For More Info, email: email:
Laboratories performing environmental analysis, forensics testing or other single quadrupole gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses that need a simple, cost-effective way to add GC-MS/MS capabilities, have a new option with the Thermo Scientific (USA) TSQ Duo triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS system.
For More Info, email: email:
“We designed this instrument specifically for labs needing to maintain their current GC or single quadrupole GC-MS workflows while adding triple quadrupole capabilities with minimal disruption,” said Paul Silcock, marketing manager, GC-MS for Thermo Fisher Scientific. “The TSQ Duo system allows users to run their current methods and then easily move over to MS/MS analysis when the time is right for them, on a familiar system using the Thermo Scientific Dionex Chromeleon Chromatography Data System (CDS).”
The Chromeleon CDS’ new selected ion monitoring (SIM) bridge software capability helps simplify the adoption of MS/MS methods on the TSQ Duo.
The new TSQ Duo system is based on the proven Thermo Scientific TRACE 1300 gas chromatograph and TSQ mass spectrometer platform, and is designed to perform both single and triple quadrupole analysis on the same instrument. In single quadrupole mode, the TSQ Duo system can deliver high–quality, full-scan spectra, searchable against popular MS libraries, and high-performance SIM quantitation. In triple quadrupole mode, selected reaction monitoring (SRM) enhances sensitivity by allowing clean detection, even in very complex matrices.
The Chromeleon CDS, popular in many laboratories around the world, can perform a number of automated actions based on in-run chromatographic results. This automation minimises analytical errors and improves efficiency. The CDS is designed to facilitate method development as well as method transfer from single to triple quadrupole workflows.
“This is the first time that chromatographers have been able to access the power of triple quadrupole mass spectrometry using the Chromeleon CDS, and we are very excited about this powerful combination,” said Frank Tontala, Chromeleon CDS product manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Sigma-Aldrich offer containers suitable for the collection of samples for volatile analysis and other types of testing. The sampling containers are cleaned according to US EPA protocol B and are available in amber and clear glass. 40 mL Pre-cleaned Vials, used for the collection of water samples for VOC analysis per a variety of methods, are provided with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) and a package of labels for each vial. The vials are shrink wrapped after cleaning to maintain their integrity. Larger volume containers are also available, in both narrow and wide mouth. All containers come with PTFE lined polypropylene caps.
Solid and water samples can be prepared for the analysis of environmental contaminants using a variety of techniques as described in various EPA methods. Sigma-Aldrich offers a full line of glassware, solvents, and spiking solutions suitable for these techniques. If extracts require cleanup prior to analysis, the Supelclean-ENVI line of solid phase extraction (SPE) tubes and materials are designed for use with environmental samples. Relevant Methods: US EPA 3540, 3541, 3550, 3510, 3520, 3535, 508, 608, 525, 625, and many additional methods. Sigma-Aldrich also offers several brands of high-purity solvents suitable for environmental testing. These include their CHROMASOLVR Plus and pesticide residue grade (PRA) product lines, suitable for environmental testing and tested for purity.
