30 Air Monitoring New Manual Infl ating Sampling Bag for Emergency Response

New Star Environmental (USA) introduces the VeriAir Flex Manual Infl ating Sample Bag ideal for emergency response situations, where an atmospheric air sample can be collected in a hot zone and then moved to a safe zone to be immediately tested with a portable gas chromatograph or other analytical instrument.

The patented design allows an atmospheric grab sample to be collected directly without any need for a calibrated sampling pump or other equipment. Simple, intrinsically safe, and made of durable, analytical grade, multi-layer foil. The VeriAir Flex requires no maintenance and no batteries to charge or replace. It is designed so anyone can use it anytime and anywhere. There is no electric pump set up, no pump calibration or required calibration equipment, and no complex or special training required.

It has a built-in volumetric pump and the valve allows the user to rapidly and easily infl ate and expel air from the sample bag several times before sample collection.

The VeriAir Flex sampling bag can be shipped in airline cargo compartments pressurised up to 11,000 ft. and is rated for temperatures of up to 176°F or 86°C. The multilayer bag material is rated at 5,800 lbs. tensile strength, is ideal for light sensitive compounds and offers excellent barrier properties. Each VeriAir Flex includes a unique identifying number on the label that can be used for chain-of-custody or sample retention records.

Instead of the regular front panel controls and some remote functions, Signal Group offer a blank front panel with an Ethernet connection which runs a suite of software on a PC.

This software is called S4i and is offered free of charge with each analyser and it allows complete access to every parameter within the analysers microprocessor. Not only do you get the normal analyser readings and remote control, S4i gives advanced functionality such as comprehensive diagnostics (temperatures, pressures, errors, etc), automatic FID fuel/ air optimisation routines, data logging, calculations, linearity audits, chart traces, automatic calibration, and user confi gurable contact-closure alarms.

The Visual Basic software is offered to systems integrators as Open Source to allow them to adapt it to their house software running systems.

This means that Signal can log on to each analyser around the world to look at diagnostics and fault fi nding, and it allows systems integrators to get the latest range of high performance gas analysers in their own colours and logo whilst integrating the running software into their own in house operation system.

This concept is a total departure from traditional designs of gas analysers and is a new opportunity to allow these types of instruments to open up to the whole world of connectivity whether that is wireless operation, Bluetooth, 3G, 4G, GPRS, satellite comms or any future systems in the pipeline. You might connect up to a cloud based website which stores all analyser data and error codes for access from anywhere in the world.

FLIR Systems, a leading supplier of Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) cameras, reports that the OGI technique has achieved inclusion in the fi nal draft of the EU Chemical sector BREF** that looks at best available techniques for emissions regulation in this important industry sector. Optical Gas Imaging is identifi ed as a best available technique for measurement of diffuse emissions of Volative Organic Compounds (VOCs) to air.

The BREF details that fugitive VOC emissions can be reduced by the detection and subsequent repair or replacement of leaking components using a leak detection and repair (LDAR) programme. Optical Gas Imaging is identifi ed as a primary detection technique that enables direct visualisation of leaks with signifi cant benefi ts over traditional gas sniffers alone.

FLIR systems OGI camera’s have become a defacto standard adopted by manufacturing plants across the world for the visualization and documentation of gas leaks. Since the introduction of OGI camera technology by FLIR in 2006, the company has supplied over 3000 OGI cameras to end user operators, service provider companies and Environmental Protection Agencies worldwide.

FLIR OGI cameras are able to scan large areas rapidly and pinpoint leaks in real time. The technology is ideal for monitoring plant that is diffi cult to reach with contact measurement tools and literally thousands of components can be scanned per shift without the need to interrupt the process. Using a FLIR OGI camera reduces repair downtime and provides verifi cation of the process. Importantly using FLIR OGI camera technology is exceptionally safe, as potentially dangerous leaks can be monitored from several meters away.
