xviii UK Focus - Gas Detection Wireless Gas Detection with the BM25 Area Monitor


BM25 Wireless is a tough looking transportable multi-gas area monitor designed for worker protection to ensure safe levels of gas before workers enter hazardous areas, monitoring continuously during welding and other maintenance work , and mobile or short term work in areas where fi xed detection systems are not suitable. Applications include shutdown sites, rig overhauls and fence-line surveillance.


The Wireless BM25 utilises a mesh style network ensuring increased reliability in safety-critical situations. In a mesh network all units are connected peer to peer without central hierarchy, thereby forming a net-like structure. Consequently, each unit can receive, send and relay data.


One of the main benefi ts of the mesh style network over ‘daisy-chain’ non-wireless systems is that should one monitor fail, its neighbours go through another route. Once the fault has been corrected, the communication resumes automatically. The two groups merge together to form only one group again.


Up to 30 BM 25s can be ‘meshed’ on the same network of up to 1Km apart and up to 16 networks can coexist with no interference. Adding a BM 25 on an existing network has never been so easy as you just need to turn it on. The BM25 is automatically added on the network.


The Wireless BM25 is capable of monitoring from one to fi ve gases through diffusion or sample draw. There are now 32 interchangeable “smart” sensor options available for the BM25 including PID, IR, electrochemical and catalytic sensors. Interchangeable/fi eld replaceable sensors provide the fl exibility of monitoring in a variety of applications thus reducing operating costs and downtime associated with instrument/sensor service.


When the BM25 detects a hazardous level of oxygen, toxic or combustible gas, the top-mounted beacon sends a fl ashing, bright signal in all directions while emitting a powerful, 103 dB siren alarm. If a BM25 goes into gas alarm, all BM25s in the network will report a corresponding alarm. Similarly, if one BM 25 fails a communication request then all the BM25’s in the chain will alert you of a fault, letting you get straight to the source of the problem. In all cases, the local gas detection capability remains effective and each BM25 will provide local alarm capability in the presence of gas.


The concave face design and construction ensures that gas sensors are protected and not blocked from the atmosphere in the event that the BM25 is knocked on its face or side in chaotic work environments. The IP66 ingress protection rating allows units to be used in harsh outdoor environments without damage from dust and water.


The operating runtime varies between 35 hours and 130 hours (depending on confi guration) and takes only 4 and a 1/2 hours to recharge. A safe trickle charger is also available for long-term area monitoring in classifi ed zones.
