The bio-aromatics behind the fi rst-ever 100% SAF trans-atlantic fl ight by a commercial airline
The inaugural 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) trans-Atlantic fl ight by Virgin Atlantic has marked a watershed moment in sustainable air travel, propelled by the groundbreaking BioForming®
Sugar to Aromatics
(S2A) technology. Pioneered by Virent and collaboratively refi ned for commercial application with Johnson Matthey, this innovative process represents a huge shift in the quest to decarbonise aviation.
Addressing the formidable challenge of curbing aviation carbon emissions, traditionally resistant to reduction, the historic Virgin Atlantic fl ight signifi es not just a milestone but a transformative breakthrough in SAF technology. Unlike previous practices involving SAF blended with conventional jet fuel, this journey across the Atlantic was exclusively powered by SAF, illustrating the potential of sustainable fuels in reshaping the aviation landscape.
Central to this was the development of bio-based aromatics designed to enhance SAF blending, enabling the seamless integration of 100% SAF into existing aircraft and fuelling infrastructure. Conforming to international jet fuel standards (Jet A), the synthetic jet fuel derived from the BioForming®
process, known as BioForm®
aromatic content. Previously achieved through blending SAF with conventional fuel, SAK represents a pivotal departure by using sustainable plant sugars into a bio-aromatic product.
Since its fi rst outing in 1997, CEM has established itself as one of Europe’s leading forums on emissions monitoring, showcasing innovation and fostering collaboration in the interest of creating a cleaner environment for all. With CEM 2023, our 25th anniversary and our biggest yet, already fully booked six months ahead of the event, anticipation is already building for the next instalment. As such, we are thrilled to announce CEM Europe 2025, which will take place from 24th to 26th September in Slovenia’s vibrant capital, Ljubljana.
As always, CEM 2025 promises attendees a deep dive into the newest regulations, cutting-edge technologies and best practices in emissions monitoring with a global scope. Expect unparalleled networking opportunities, connecting with industry veterans and pioneering researchers as well as leading CEMs equipment and service providers. It’s an unmissable opportunity to garner unparalleled insight on regulation, best practices and the cutting edge of emissions monitoring technologies.
In many ways, Ljubljana offers the perfect backdrop for this event. Famed for its landscapes, its rich and lovingly preserved heritage, this icon of Central Europe is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and environmental health, too, having been awarded the title of European Green Capital in recent years. Successful pedestrianisation, the beautiful Ljubljanica and an emphasis on green public space make Ljubljana an apt and inspiring location for discussions of emissions monitoring. Even better, in their down-time, attendees will have gems of European history, like Ljubljana Castle and the Old Town, within arm’s reach.
With our track record, early bookings are strongly advised. So, if you’re interested in exhibiting at CEM Europe 2025, head to:

This innovation not only satisfi es the essential aromatic content for jet fuel but also facilitates blending with a spectrum of other SAFs. The signifi cance lies in BioForm®
Demonstrating its effi cacy, various fl ights using BioForm®
SAK’s role as a ‘normaliser,’ aligning diverse SAF blend stocks with aviation standards. SAK underscore its capacity to meet aviation performance criteria,
heralding a transformative era. Maurits van Tol, Chief Executive of Catalyst Technologies at Johnson Matthey, emphasised the vital role of BioForming®
technology
in decarbonising air travel. The success of the Virgin Atlantic fl ight underscores the urgent need for expanding SAF production. Dave Kettner, President and General Counsel of Virent, highlighted the tailored design of BioForming S2A to not only meet current jet fuel specifi cations but also deliver cleaner, more effi cient fuel, reducing particulate matter emissions.
BioForm® SAK’s pivotal feature is its ability to provide essential aromatics for jet fuel without requiring extensive modifi cations to
current aircraft and infrastructure. This ‘drop-in’ compatibility signifi es a pivotal juncture in the aviation industry’s trajectory towards decarbonisation and sustainability, epitomising a landmark achievement in the pursuit of a greener aviation future.
