Measurement and Testing New high-fl ow solenoid valve increases plant reliability and operating effi ciency

Emerson has introduced the new ASCO™ Series 327C solenoid valve, which features a direct-acting, high-fl ow design that provides superior fl ow-to-power ratio compared to similar valves. The Series 327C design features a balanced poppet construction that permits high fl ows at minimum power levels, making it ideal for use in power plants, refi neries and chemical processing facilities. Facilities like these can have hundreds, even thousands, of valves installed throughout their processes and systems. Even one malfunctioning valve can disrupt critical gas and fl uid fl ows, impacting process quality and forcing unscheduled downtime and extra maintenance. The ASCO Series 327C incorporates features that combine reliability and durability to increase operational effi ciency and improve process certainty. The valve features a unique, two-layer dynamic seal technology that provides low friction and excellent stiction resistance, helping ensure reliable valve operation in environments with temperatures ranging from –60 to 90 degrees Celsius. In addition, the valve is SIL (Safety Integrity Level) 3 Capable, demonstrating a high level of performance integrity and a very low risk of failure over the valve’s projected lifecycle.

“Facilities such as power plants and refi neries have demanding, high-fl ow gas and fl uid delivery processes and need valves that are effi cient, reliable and easy to maintain across thousands of hours of operation,” said Anne Sophie Kedad, director of marketing with Emerson’s discrete automation group. “The ASCO Series 327C solenoid valve provides the reliable performance these facilities require, helping improve operational effi ciency by minimizing unnecessary maintenance trips and extending the intervals between proof tests.” The ASCO Series 327C valve can help streamline supply chains and simplify specifi cation complexities for global industrial users by providing a single, globally approved solution for high-fl ow solenoid valve applications. The valve also offers a unique electrical test connection to minimize fi eld commissioning time and prevent moisture ingress in storage.

ABB has launched ABB Ability™ SmartMaster, a comprehensive asset performance management platform for verifi cation and condition monitoring of instrumentation and fi eld devices in the water, wastewater, chemical, oil & gas, and other industries. SmartMaster gathers, analyses and verifi es diagnostic data from instruments remotely, without interrupting current measurement tasks.

The platform can be used with a range of ABB and third-party instruments, such as fl ow meters, level meters, temperature, and pressure sensors. Available as an on-premise or cloud-based solution, SmartMaster sends a valuable fl eet level overview from the fi eld straight to the customer’s phone, tablet, or other devices.

SmartMaster addresses key challenges for industrial companies such as managing the sheer volume of instruments that are installed on any given plant. Many facilities typically have hundreds or even thousands of devices, some of which may be installed in hard to reach or hazardous areas. Another big challenge is applications and data running in silos. This limits insights and effi ciency of operations. By getting better, actionable insights, industrial companies can see both increased effi ciency and environmental benefi ts.

“Plant operators are expected to increase effi ciency as well as become more sustainable and for this, it’s critical that each device, each instrument performs optimally in the industrial process,” said Amina Hamidi, Managing Director, Business Line Instrumentation, ABB Measurement & Analytics. “With hundreds of fi eld devices working in the background, optimal performance is impossible to achieve without digital service technology. The ABB Ability™ SmartMaster connects the physical and digital worlds, ensuring that instruments perform optimally.”

The platform offers extended possibilities for device optimization and maintenance. With SmartMaster, plant operators can access data on instrument status and identify in advance any potential issues that could affect measurement performance or result in unplanned downtime.

This knowledge helps them to plan servicing, spare part orders and device replacement. SmartMaster provides the information as calendar view analysis and an analytical report of failure scenarios. SmartMaster is part of ABB Measurement & Analytics digital suite of solutions that enable optimized plant operations. The suite comprises ABB Ability™ Smart Device Manager, ABB Ability™ Verifi cation for measurement devices, and ABB Ability™ SmartMaster.

The HT405P and HT280P are the most recent product developments from Inov8 Systems Ltd, and are the lab version of the highly successful range of online oil in water analysers. The purpose of the HT range is to offer customers a quick and accurate measurement check for oil content in water, but without the need for using any time- consuming solvent extraction techniques.

The measurement technique incorporated is laser induced fl uorescence or Deep UV Fluorescence, depending on the target oil type to be detected. Once the device is calibrated, a sample of oily water is placed in the measuring chamber. A probe is then placed into the chamber and the measurement is taken within seconds.

The HT405P uses a 405nm light source and is ideal for use in measuring crude oil in water and is normally considered for produced water applications, either on oil production sites or oil storage and refi ning locations. The HT280P employs a Deep UV light source and is for use in measuring lighter oils in water, such as refi ned oils, Diesel, Jet Fuel, Hydraulic oils and gas condensates, and so can be considered for a variety of locations, such as general industrial, power stations, re-fuelling depots etc.

Experience over many years of using fl uorescence measurement techniques has shown that a spectrometer is essential for oil content measurement. Traditional fl uorescence based analysers measure on a single wavelength, whereas the HT405P and HT280P analysers can provide a full spectral analysis, such capability provides several necessary benefi ts:

• Eliminate chemical interference that occurs in 99% of applications.

• Oil type detection that offers the ability to switch calibration depending on water content so when different oil types come onstream or different chemicals are introduced the analyser will select the correct calibration curve.

• Verifi es that the analyser is reading accurately.

Additional benefi ts include storage capacity for saving measurements that can be referred to as and when required, and Wi-Fi enabled for remote access if required for software updates or troubleshooting. The touch screen interface is intuitive and easy to navigate.
