Measurement and Testing 45 Real-Time, On-Site Oil Condition Measurements

With an in-service weight of only 4lbs (1.8 Kg) the FluidScan Lubricant Condition Monitor is so portable and easy to use that it can be used for measurements in locations where other instruments would be too bulky or inconvenient – such as at the top of a wind turbine or on an oil rig. Using Infra-Red spectroscopy, the FluidScan determines key lubricant condition parameters like TAN, TBN, oxidation, nitration, sulfation, soot, glycol, water and additive depletion in less than one minute. With no delay waiting for laboratory results, vital preventive maintenance can be triggered immediately, thereby avoiding catastrophic equipment failure. Also, costly but unnecessary lubricant replacement can be postponed until actually required.

A unique (Patent Pending) feature of the FluidScan that hugely simplifies the operating procedure is its “flip-top” sample cell that can be loaded with one hand from a pipette or dipstick and accommodates all sample types from biodiesel to heavy greases. No solvents are needed for cleaning, a real advantage when working in hazardous environments. A simple wipe over with a cleaning patch is sufficient, with a built-in routine that checks for cell cleanliness before allowing the next measurement to proceed. The cell design also eliminates the fringing effects experienced with conventional short pathlength cells.

Sample spectra can be compared with an extensive library of spectra from a large database of commonly used lubricants, and a “traffic light” pass/warning/fail system provides an immediate indication of sample condition without the need for spectrum interpretation. When quantitative results are needed, chemometric techniques automatically correct for interferences, giving improved accuracy.

Results are displayed on an integral colour screen and a built-in lithium battery gives 6 to 8 hours use dependent upon conditions. The Fluidscan also has a comprehensive built-in database so individual asset results are stored, and can be easily downloaded to PC for reporting/trending purposes.

The FluidScan is manufactured by Spectro Inc. and distributed in the United Kingdom by Analysco Ltd.

Monitoring Chlorine Concentrations in Distillate Hydrotreater Feedstocks

For distillate and gas oil streams the goal is to reduce the sulphur content of blend stocks used in diesel fuel and/or downstream upgrading units. In the case of heavy naphtha, the primary objective of hydrotreating is to clean up the feed before sending it to the reformer. The key concern with organic chlorides in refineries is its conversion to hydrochloric acid within hydrotreaters. Since as a rule, these units operate with very little water, there is a tendency to have any of the produced HCl accumulate in the very small water volumes present in the hydrotreater effluent. The end result is a severe drop in pH and aggressive corrosion of metallurgies. For this reason, ppm levels of organic chlorides in crudes can potentially be quite problematic.

The CLORA Online Analyser from XOS (USA) provides an analytical solution to monitor chlorine concentrations in hydrotreater feedstock with sub- ppm detection limits. ASTM D 4929 (a lab based method for organic chlorine determination by distillation and biphenyl reduction or micro-coulometry) is limited in its ability to measure organic chlorides in compounds with boiling points below 400 deg F. It is unable to provide any quantification of organic chlorides in heavier streams such as distillates or gas oils. Some refiners have reported evidence of organic chloride induced corrosion in distillate and gas oil hydrotreaters. The availability of equipment capable of measuring organic chlorides in both distillate and gas oil feeds is beneficial from a corrosion management viewpoint.

New Easy-to-Use ASTM Test Method for Measuring Soot Levels In Diesel Engine Lubricating Oils

Wilks Enterprise (USA) is pleased to announce that the InfraCal Soot Meter now gives users an approved ASTM testing method for measuring the percent level of soot in diesel engine lubricating oil. In late June, the ASTM issued Method D7686-2011 entitled “Test Method for Field-Based Condition Monitoring of Soot in In- Service Lubricants Using a Fixed-Filter Infrared (IR) instrument.” With the InfraCal Soot Meter, rapid, on-site measurement of soot concentration levels in diesel engine oils at levels as high as 12 - 15% takes less than 30 seconds. This compact, factory-calibrated pushbutton analyser provides direct readout of the percent of soot in diesel engine lubricating oils without sample preparation, dilution, or solvents and messy transmission cells to clean. Since the InfraCal Soot Meter was specifically designed for easy, on-site field testing, it represents a major time savings from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and FT-IR methods that are impractical as field analysis methods. The Soot Meter is also significantly lower in cost and one step, pushbutton operation makes it easy to use with minimal operator training. A rugged, no-moving parts design ensures years of virtually maintenance-free operation with the InfraCal Soot Meter. Weighing less than 5 lbs., it operates off 12 volt d.c. power for on- site field measurements. It is ideal for use at oil/engine testing laboratories, lubricant and additive manufacturers, and power generation stations, or for truck, bus, and off-highway equipment fleets. The InfraCal Soot Meter is Ideal for use on all types of diesel lubricating oils and engines and gives users an ASTM approved test method.
