IR Gas Detector Now Approved to Latest Amendment of Marine Equipment Directive
Crowcon’s (UK) Xgard IR infrared (IR) gas detector is now approved to the latest amendment of the Marine Equipment Directive (MED, 96/98/EC). This means the low cost detector can be used to detect flammable gases and vapour hazards on dive vessels, coastguard vessels, ferries and other marine vessels.
Applications for the Xgard IR include pump rooms and monitoring leaks in storage tanks, pipes and valves. It provides fast early warning of gas accumulations before concentrations reach flammable levels. Detection is in the range 0 – 100% LEL.
Unlike conventional sensors (such as catalytic pellistors) the Xgard IR’s sensor is immune to being poisoned or inhibited by other substances. Infrared sensing has other benefits too: unlike pellistors, IR sensors will fail to safety, detect flammable gas in inert backgrounds and are not damaged by high gas concentrations.
The Xgard IR is available with a 316 stainless steel enclosure for maximum corrosion resistance in the most extreme marine environments. The sensor, which has a life expectancy of over 5 years, is a simple plug-in module that makes replacement quick and easy. ATEX, IECEx and UL approved for use in hazardous areas, the Xgard IR is also Exd flameproof rated.

ATEX Approved Viscometers for Reproducable Inline Measurements
Marimex Industries (Germany) offers their VA-300 model for reliable inline viscosity measurements, suitbale for use in pipes as well as in reactors. Individual installation scenarios demand tailor-made sensors. VA-300 series ViscoScope sensors can be used to realise any technically feasible design, therefore mostly no modifications on existing pipes or reactor nozzles are necessary.
Installations in bunker oil, bitumen and fuel oil are a small part of the manyfold applications. Of course the sensor is available with ATEX certificate to mount the probe in Zone 0.
With the integrated RTD the process temperature will be measured at the same place where the viscosity is measured, allowing an accurate temperature compensation to a reference temperature. All transmitters of the ViscoScope series are capable to calculate the kinematic viscosity in cSt.
User-selectable and configurable analogue outputs and serial interfaces render a connection to any process control system. If desired, a relay board option is also available.

Fixed Gas Detector Achieves INMETRO Approval
Industrial Scientific-Oldham (France) is pleased to announce that the OLCT 100 fixed gas detector has been certified by the Brazilian Authorities and now carries the INMETRO mark of approval. The OLCT 100 XP and OLCT 100 have been certified as flameproof or intrinsically safe for use in zones 1 or 21, Group IIC or IIIC hazardous locations.
Designed for the detection of explosive gases, toxic gases or oxygen, the detector is offered with a Wheatstone bridge output (OLC 100) or 4-20mA output (OLCT 100). The OLCT 100 was also developed to conform to the safety standards IEC 61508 and EN 50402.
The OLCT 100 is design to meet even the most demanding applications and is available in catalytic bead, electrochemical, semiconductor and infrared sensor technologies.
The latest addition to the OLCT 100 range, the infrared sensor, allows it to be used in more severe environmental conditions, where the presence of poisons could harm the use of a catalytic cell.
This new patented IR sensor from Oldham makes the OLCT 100 XP IR one of the best and most reliable infrared detectors on the market. The OLCT 100 XP IR is SIL 2 certified and its Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) is 0.53 x 10-3 with a yearly interval maintenance test.
With a 3-year warranty on the sensor and on the electronics, the OLCT 100 XP-IR will provide reliability and extended life.

Smoke and Heat Detection for Non-Hazardous Areas
Detector Electronics Corporation (USA) has introduced its Addressable Smoke and Heat (ASH) Module. The ASH Module is an interface device that manages inputs/outputs between the Eagle Quantum Premier®
(EQP) Safety System and devices in non-hazardous
areas, such as living quarters and control rooms. Detector Electronics Corporation, otherwise known as Det-Tronics is a business of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
GasPoint Stand alone single gas detector
“The ASH Module seamlessly integrates non-hazardous and hazardous areas into a single fire and gas life-safety system,” says Mike Bragg, Product Manager at Det-Tronics.
The ASH Module is flexible enough to support multiple addressable devices such as smoke detectors, heat detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, manual call stations, beacons, sounders, and I/O modules. Powerful yet simple programming is provided allowing users to tailor the solution beyond the capabilities of conventional fire panels. In addition, the ASH Module is CE marked; hazardous rated by FM, CSA, ATEX, IECEx; and FM performance approved to NFPA 72-2010.
