30 Safety - Focus on ATEX IR Combustible Gas Sensor Module Now with HART Interface

Sierra Monitor Corporation (USA) proudly announces that the Model 5100-28-IT infrared Combustible Gas Sensor Module, now includes HART interface. The 5100- 28-IT is truly network enabled, meeting user’s and integrator’s needs to communication with any plant-wide control and monitoring system.

HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) is a global bi-directional communication protocol standard for sending and receiving digital information across analog wires between smart field devices and host control or monitoring systems. The host can be any software application from a technician’s hand-held device or laptop to a plant’s process control, Asset management, safety or other system using any control platform. The HART protocol used on the Sierra Monitor IR Combustibles Gas Sensor Module has been developed to fully comply with the HART specifications outlined by the HART Communication Foundation.

The 5100-28-IT sensor module now provides interface via HART or 4-20 mA, Modbus RS-485 or Sierra Monitor’s proprietary Sentry bus. The 5100-28-IT is a standalone module loaded with the features required to provide the due diligence expected in hazardous areas including; long term calibration interval for reduced maintenance costs, FM approved for performance and area safety requirements including Group B and SIL Certified.

The sensor module provides a rapid response time with high accuracy, and specifications unmatched in the industry. Integral scrolling LED is provided with magnet operated menu for display of gas status and easy, non-intrusive calibration. The isolated 4-20mA, Modbus RTU, HART and Sentry digital bus output meet specific application communications requirements. In addition, integral alarm relays may be supplemented by higher amperage control relays in the same enclosure.

ATEX Transmitter Offers the Fastest Monitoring of Flammable Gases

Wherever flammable gases or vapours are found, GfG’s (Germany) CC28 provides the best solution for safe monitoring. ATEX-certified design, built-in EX-certified horn and bright LED lights allow safe operation within highly flammable areas. The gas alarm is transmitted to the central control panel, simultaneously warning the control room and the worker in the danger area.

Using GfG’s unique sensor technology, coupled with a special "chimney-effect" the CC28 transmitter has the shortest response time in the market, detecting flammable gases using catalytic bead technology. When used in conjunction with our GMA controller series, a programmed delta alarm can shorten the response

time still further. This gives an extra level of safety when handling explosive gas risks.

Installation and sensor exchange are quick and easy using pre-calibrated smart, plug-in sensors. One-man calibration/ adjustment is possible directly at the transmitter, without opening the housing.

Some flammable gases are lighter than air (e.g. methane). If a transmitter is installed close to the ceiling, it can be connected by a fixed installed cable with a plug connection to the remote control. Thus, all adjustments can be made comfortably from floor level. With one remote control device, an unlimited number of transmitters can be controlled in this way. Using transmitters without display, the remote control shows the current values on its’ own display. The display of the remote control mimics the transmitter display exactly. Inspection, maintenance and adjustment are therefore greatly simplified. Using the remote control inspection, service and calibration can be performed easily by one person.

Deutschmann Automation expands its range of ready-to-install UNIGATE IC fieldbus interfaces, adding a gateway for the building automation protocol BACnet/IP. UNIGATE CL and CX versions for this protocol are under way. While UNIGATE IC gateways are designed for direct integration into terminal devices, UNIGATE CL and CX devices come in a DIN rail housing. The gate-ways from Deutschmann’s new UNIGATE CX series, which integrate two UNIGATE CL devices each, connect different industrial communication net-works. Measuring only 45 x 25 mm, the devices contain all necessary components, including a microcontroller, Flash, RAM, and a bus controller.

This certified solution can be connected to the terminal device’s microprocessor via a UART- interface, assisting it by handling all data traffic. Deutschmann’s gate-ways have the unique characteristic of converting the terminal devices’ protocol via a script. The manufacturer also

offers the free-of-charge Protocol Developer PC tool for creating the script and optimally adjusting it to the terminal device and bus requirements. Changes to the firmware of the terminal device are no longer necessary. To test the script, a second serial interface of the UNIGATE IC can be used as a debug interface or as a diagnosis output. Deutschmann also provides UNIGATE ICs for example for; Profibus DP, MPI, INTERBUS, DeviceNet, CANopen, LonWorks, Ethernet TCP/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU/ASCII, EtherNet/IP, POWERLINK, and PROFINET.

Industrial Scientific (USA) announces the availability of 10 new 116 litre gas cylinders. The new 116 litre cylinders are only slightly larger in size than the popular 58 liter gas cylinders; however, the cylinders hold twice the volume of gas.

Depending on the customers’ calibration gas usage, the 116 litre cylinders provide a better cost per liter value than the 58 litre cylinders.

Additionally, the larger cylinders will need changed less frequently, further reducing costs with fewer orders, as well as less maintenance time. Users of existing 58 litre cylinders will not need to purchase new gas regulators as the 116 litre cylinders use the same regulators.

The cylinders are also more environmentally friendly with twice the volume of gas in roughly the same package. As an ISO14001:2004 certified company, Industrial Scientific is committed to seeking out materials, processes and practices that are environmentally responsible.

and Calibrator Approved Intrinsically Safe

HART® Communicator

The hand-held DPI 620 advanced multifunction calibrator/HART®

communicator from GE Sensing (UK) is

approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres by Baseefa, the British certification body. The Baseefa approval carries both ATEX and IECEx certification allowing the instrument to be employed globally in Zone 0 areas. The certification also extends to the instrument’s battery pack, permitting hot swapping within hazardous locations. The approval now further extends the range of potential applications of the powerful communicator/calibrator, especially in the oil and gas and process sectors.

As Mike Shelton, product manager at GE, explains, “The DPI620 now offers plant engineers and technicians throughout the industrial and process sectors a single instrument which can be used for configuration, commissioning, maintenance and calibration, wherever the location.”

To comply with the IS certification, the display has been redesigned and now features a, bright, organic liquid crystal display (OLCD) which offers excellent viewability at a wide range of angles and in virtually all lighting conditions. As with all instruments in the DPI620 family, the IS version is rugged and compact and weather-proofed to IP65. It retains all the software of the existing DPI620 platform and supports Windows CE, providing standard Windows applications and file management while offering the computing power to view pdf files and jpeg images such as loop diagrams, data sheets, safety procedures, spreadsheets and to create text documents.

The introduction of the IS version follows the recent successful incorporation of HART®

compatibility into the DPI620

platform. All versions of the DPI 620 now contain a complete HART library of registered HART device descriptions, making the DPI620 a true communicator/calibrator. Device description (DD) and software upgrades may be simply downloaded free- of-charge, from the GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies website and this includes updating all existing DPI 620 models. Pressure-generation and measurement is still an important feature of the IS version, with on-board pressure generation from vacuum to 100 bar pneumatic or 0 to 1000 bar hydraulic, with accuracies from 0.005% FS.
