Measurement and Testing 43 Enhanced Version of Integrated Production Control System Yokogawa Electric Corporation (Netherlands) have released Centum VP R5.03: an enhanced version of the company’s flagship integrated production control system.
New features in Centum VP R5.03 include a wide area communication (WAC) router for control via public communications networks, enhanced batch functions, easy integration with intelligent electric devices (IEDs), and an eight-loop operation keyboard.
The new WAC router enables a CENTUM VP system to remotely monitor and control equipment over a wide area network (WAN) established using public communication lines or satellite links.
The WAC router provides the same high reliability and security as the Vnet/IP control network that is used with Yokogawa production control systems. For added reliability, the router has dual redundant communication modules. The router enables reliable and inexpensive monitoring and control of widely distributed facilities such as offshore platforms for oil and gas exploration and production. The Centum VP R5.03 batch package is based on ISA-88 and has enhanced functions that allows greater flexibility when accommodating changes in production procedures.
Centum VP R5.03 supports the IEC 61850 communication protocol, which has been widely adopted in the electric power industry and other industries that operate extensive electrical facilities. It allows better integration with power plant operations, and also enables the monitoring of electrical facilities at many other types of plants. A new keyboard has also been released with sets of dedicated function keys that can be used to simultaneously adjust eight control loops.

Large amounts of drill cuttings are produced in off-shore drilling and must meet an allowable limit on the amount of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) they contain for ocean disposal. As an example, the North Sea currently has a 1% limit for disposal of drilling cuttings. Transporting the cuttings to shore is labour intensive, costly and could cease due to bad weather. Limit requirements also must be met for on-shore disposal or reuse. Whether on-shore or off-shore disposal, InfraCal Analysers can verify that the oil content of the drill cuttings is below the allowable limit in less than 15 minutes.
The InfraCal Analyser is a compact, fixed-filter mid-infrared analyser from Wilks Enterprises (USA) with no moving parts. Hydrocarbons are measured at 3.4 micrometers (2930 cm-1
). The
analyser is rugged and portable -- weighing less than 5 pounds -- and the user interface is specifically designed for non-technical users.
The analysis procedure involves several simple steps allowing an operator with minimal training to do the analysis. 1. The sample is collected in a container. 2. The solvent (hexane, pentane, cyclohexane, perchloroethylene or S-316) is added at a ratio of one part solvent to ten parts sample. For solids testing, the ratio is one part solids to one part sample. 3. After shaking for 2 minutes the solvent partitions and a portion of the solvent is introduced to the infrared analyser for measurement. With soil, the solids are filtered from the solvent prior to testing. 4. The complete analysis from sample collection to final result takes less than 15 minutes.
