Viscosity Measurement of Jet Fuel Compliant with ASTM D7042
Anton Paar’s SVM 3000 Stabinger Viscometer has been revolutionising viscosity measurement for over ten years. With the release of the new ASTM D7042-12a standard it proceeds further from being a fascinating innovation to a recognised and standardised solution.
In addition to base oils, diesel fuel and formulated oils the new ASTM D7042-12a standard now contains a precision statement for Jet Fuel, as well as a bias statement to ASTM D445 which allows calculation of an ASTM D445 equivalent result on these samples.
The research reports for Jet Fuel (RR-D02 1750) showed that the repeatability and reproducibility performance of the Stabinger Viscometer was as good as, and in most points even better than, the ASTM D445 performance.
The SVM 3000 is the ideal solution for viscosity measurements on jet fuel, providing results in less than 3 minutes after a quick startup time and bringing large power savings and reduced solvent consumption. The integrated Peltier electronic temperature control simplifies measurements at -20 °C.

Continuous Monitoring During the Production Process …
Process sensors make a significant contribution to increasing a plant's productivity. Due to the continuous inline measurement of the quality parameters, the consumption of raw materials and energy is optimised and production is maximised. Anton Paar's inline sensors are easy to integrate. They are not sensitive to changes in process conditions and can be installed directly in the main line or tank. Installation work is kept to a minimum. Once fitted, the robust sensors operate for years without maintenance as there are no moving parts and no operating costs. You can fit a sensor and forget about it, simply relying on the accurate measurement values and long life. Today, Anton Paar density meters which were installed in the mid-1980s for measuring the concentration of boric acid are still delivering reliable values with the same high level of accuracy as on their first day in operation.
Process density meters are ideal for highly accurate online metering of petroleum products. True density, temperature and all API values are calculated according to ASTM D1250. All sensors have ATEX and FM certification, PTB and BEV approval.
… and Double-Checking the Results in the Lab
To monitor your important processes with double reliability it is important to conduct a batch inspection of process samples. Cross-checking the performance of your process equipment at regular intervals using a DMA Generation M density meter in the laboratory increases the certainty that production is proceeding as it should. Constant monitoring with reliable quality control prevents out-of-spec products.
With its LIMS connection, a density meter from Anton Paar also ensures you can have quick and paper-less documentation and that results are available for monitoring purposes anywhere in the network

Testing the Viscoelastic Properties of Bitumen and Asphalt
Not only liquid fuels but also heavy ends are an important output of a refinery. The leading instrument for asphalt testing is Anton Paar’s SmartPave Asphalt Rheometer. The SmartPave is a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) combined with a completely new and unique Peltier heating system to determine the viscoelastic properties of bitumen and asphalt.
The SmartPave incorporates new and innovative features that take asphalt testing to previously unattained levels of accuracy, comfort, and ease of use. Guided operations, such as a fully automatic temperature setting routine, guides you through the grading process, making asphalt grading easy and efficient. The broad torque range and true stress and strain capabilities allow you to adjust the measurements to suit your needs.
To give insights into the elastomeric characteristics of bitumen, the Ductilometer
(DD 3) is the instrument of choice. It covers the elastic recovery of a bituminous material measured by the recoverable strain after a briquet specimen is expanded at 25 °C for 10 or 20 cm and in this position is cut into two halves at the midpoint. After a recovery time of 60 or 30 minutes the shrinkage is measured and expressed as a percentage of the prior elongation.

Preparing Samples from the Petrochemical Industry for Subsequent Determination of (Trace) Elemental Concentrations
High Pressure Asher HPA-S is the reference instrument for wet-chemical acid digestion. It fulfills ASTM C1234-11 (Standard practice for the preparation of oils and oily waste samples by high pressure, high temperature digestion for trace element determination).
HPA-S safely and reproducibly decomposes samples of up to 1.5 grams in hermetically sealed reaction vessels. Uniform heating and exact temperature control up to 300 °C at a pressure of 130 bar ensures the total mineralisation of challenging samples. Applying such high temperatures and pressures makes HPA-S a unique troubleshooter for difficult organic and inorganic samples in routine analysis as well as in R&D applications.
The Multiwave PRO microwave reaction system is designed to achieve the maximum productivity and highest decomposition quality by achieving reaction conditions of up to 300 °C and 80 bar simultaneously. Microwave heating allows digestions in a fraction of the time required by conventional techniques. The application library of Multiwave PRO contains numerous methods for petroleum-related samples. Amongst others the instrument fulfills the requirements of EPA Method 3052 (Microwave-assisted acid digestion of siliceous and organically based matrices).
Using Multiwave PRO, matrix interferences which can arise in subsequent measuring methods like ICP-MS or AAS are a thing of the past. Microwave-induced oxygen combustion, a special application in Multiwave PRO, supports the measurement of halogens from petrochemical samples.
