34 Anton Paar Measuring Solutions for Increased Efficiency at Refineries

In recent years refineries have embraced the philosophy of environmental responsibility and greatly increased the efficiency of their production. Accurate and smooth-running measuring equipment can contribute significantly to achieving this aim: increasing efficiency and reducing the consumption of chemicals and production of waste. Environmental responsibility has become the key to success for refineries at a time when more than 3100 million tons of crude oil is being produced worldwide each year.

As crude oils and petroleum products are complex mixtures, this makes their characterisation very complicated. Chemical characterisation is impractical, tedious and time-consuming, and is therefore frequently substituted by characterisation via physical properties. Important properties which are measured include: density, viscosity, flash point and vapour pressure.

45 years of Experience in Petroleum Density Checks

Density can be measured easily in the laboratory as well as online, and much information is derived from it, making it a very useful and frequently determined physical property in the petroleum industry.

Based on 45 years of experience in developing digital density meters and close cooperation with users, Anton Paar provides instrumentation for measuring numerous petroleum products in a wide variety of process steps, from research to the conversion of crude oil and final quality checks on refined products.

Testing Finished Products in the Laboratory

Quality control checks on finished products frequently involves certification and requires the high accuracy provided, for example, by Anton Paar’s 5- and 6-digit accuracy density meters. Usually a dedicated density meter is used only for QC checks so that contamination from process samples is avoided.

Here adding a sample changer saves time and lets the automated system do the ‘dirty work’ for you. Also, this is particularly valuable when performing regular checks on crude oil before and after blending, and before and after desalting as well as testing used oil samples from transformers and cooling towers.

Completely Reliable Density Results

Building on 45 years of experience in digital density measurements, DMA Generation M density meters from Anton Paar provide reliable density results from 0 °C to 95 °C at any viscosity according to ASTM D 4052 and ASTM D 5002 as well as density converted to API (American Petroleum Institute) gravity.

This makes DMA M meters suitable for all types of sample: from highly viscous raw material (desalted crude oil) to volatile byproducts (solvents) and finished products like bitumen, gasoline or jet fuel.

Automation options range from simple sample handling units to fully automated heated sample changers for high sample throughput - all Plug and Play. Obtained density results are highly accurate at user-defined measuring temperatures and any viscosities. Whether for occasional measurements or regular monitoring of process samples, measurements are safe and reliable.

The reliability of DMA M density meters is unbeaten on the market due to the built-

in FillingCheckTM feature which automatically monitors and documents the quality of the sample filling and immediately alerts the operator of any errors.

In accordance with ASTM D7777 the portable density meter DMA 35 Ex Petrol is the solution for quick density results in hazardous areas. A quick density check using the intrinsically safe portable density meter DMA 35 Ex Petrol (Ex marking II 2 G EX ib IIC T4) makes sure the type and quality of incoming material is what it is supposed to be. The sample is taken directly from the drum or tanker and measured there without needing to transport samples back and forward to a lab.

DMA 35 Ex Petrol efficiently measures the different layers of temperatures and densities inside an oil tank during blending and long-term storage. To obtain a qualified statement on the composition of the product in the tank, samples from different positions in the tank are taken and measured to learn about their origin or check for water contamination, stratification and status of blending.

Refractive Index Measurements According to ASTM D1218

High-Pressure, High-Temperature Density Measurements

To check the quality of crude oil or blended bitumen and test the density of asphalt, vacuum tower bottoms or even LPG, the equipment of choice is the DMA HP, a high-temperature and high-pressure density cell. The DMA HP measures the density of all these samples at elevated temperatures (up to 200 °C) and pressures up to 700 bar (14,000 psi). This digital density meter from Anton Paar provides benefits over alternative measuring equipment: Easy handling regardless of the exact sample formulation combined with low sample volume and ensured operator safety when solid samples are heated up to high temperatures for the most accurate analysis. For R&D experts who are interested in the behaviour of crude oil deep in the ground in order to increase the efficiency of extraction, DMA HPM from Anton Paar is unrivalled for EOR studies.

A reliable differentiation of different lubricant oils in each blending and filling line is essential. With a density measurement alone around 60% of the lubricants can be distinguished - with a viscosity measurement 90%. With a combination of both measurements, more than 99% of the lubricant oils can be reliably determined. When process measurements for both density and viscosity are used, lubricant blending companies improve their quality and increase production safety.

As well as adding a sample changer or special density cell for high pressures and temperatures, a DMA Generation M density meter can also be connected to a refractometer according to ASTM D1218. Density and refractive index are then determined at the same time from the same sample which saves time and provides reliable results when analysing aviation fuels or similar finished products. Measured values are given according to your official product specifications (e.g. ASTM). This combination of instruments is the first step to a modular measuring system called the Modulyser Unlimited Class. A wide range of sample filling units and measuring modules can be added at a later date, making the Modulyser Unlimited class fit for future requirements.
