8 Safety Technologies To Help Plant Workers Redefine Teir Places Of Work
Honeywell (USA) recently, at its largest gathering of industrial customers, announced several new services and technologies to help plant workers redefine how they maintain system uptime and reliability, while providing safer operations.
The company introduced attendees at the 2013 Honeywell Users Group Americas Symposium to Assurance 360, a proven innovative approach to service management that offers flexible programming to assure continued performance of Honeywell control systems. The program provides comprehensive support throughout the plant’s lifecycle in addition to expert resources to guarantee performance outcomes, differentiating it from traditional service offerings.
Additionally, conference attendees heard details about Honeywell’s expanded portfolio of Operations Excellence solutions, including new alarm management and performance monitoring software. Honeywell also announced it has expanded its widely used Benefits Guardianship service program to include a variety of engineering led services.
“The common thread among these services and solutions is that they will help shape the plant workforce of the future,” said Darius Adamczyk, President and CEO, Honeywell Process Solutions. “Manufacturers are being challenged to continuously improve operations, respond to ever-changing business conditions, and reduce overall costs. Services like Assurance 360 and Benefits Guardianship directly address those market challenges by making Honeywell technology experts extensions of a plant’s staff, while our Operations Excellence software offerings give operators and engineers better tools to serve as their companies’ most-important business assets.”
Assurance 360 Services – A multi-year service partnership offering that supports manufacturers in all industries, Assurance 360 Services allow plant personnel to focus on operations while Honeywell performance experts focus on maintaining, supporting and optimising system performance to help the plant meet its goals. The offering provides remote monitoring, change management, risk mitigation, technology upgrade and new installation support, and performance-based metrics and reporting. Assurance 360 offers two service levels: Performa provides Honeywell support personnel to act in advisory roles across all areas covered by the program; Optima engages Honeywell personnel to both advise and directly handle tasks such as implementing change management, tracking and improving metrics, and scheduling and implementing new technology upgrades and installations. Honeywell developed the Assurance 360 Services program in direct response to customer feedback about an increasing number of compliance requirements and open system complexities that are changing the way they must manage assets.
Operations Excellence – Honeywell’s expanded portfolio of solutions designed to improve operational excellence includes three new software offerings. First, the Intuition Operations Monitoring software, built on Honeywell’s Intuition platform, is used to help operators keep the process within the best operating zone. Secondly, the new Control Performance Monitoring software helps engineers to monitor, identify, diagnose and remedy process control asset issues across all plant layers. Lastly, Honeywell’s latest Alarm Management software helps operators better manage their processes without compromising safe operations.
Benefits Guardianship Program Plus (BGP Plus) – Honeywell has extended its Benefits Guardianship Program, a premium service that delivers expertise beyond traditional product support, providing priority phone access to experienced and qualified specialists, to quickly resolve performance problems, and to deliver the latest software to improve functionality and to safeguard investments. The new BGP Plus service provides reactive and proactive engineering led services to increase uptime of the software, to provide early detection of performance drift and to recommend resolutions to sustain performance.

Bulletproof Gas Detector Now SIL 2 Certified
Detcon (USA), an IST Company, have announced that their environmentally bulletproof TP- 700 hydrogen sulphide MOS gas detector is now certified SIL 2 capable. The device recently underwent stringent functional safety assessments by third party agency exida and was found to be in compliance with IEC61508: 2010 Parts 1-7.
The Model 700’s rugged framework includes an electro-polished 316 stainless steel housing with fully encapsulated electronics and dual layer surge protection. These details in design virtually eliminate the threat of outside damage to internal components due to water ingress, corrosion, vibration and transient spikes.
Sensor elements are simple plug-in components for easy replacement in the field while operator interface is user friendly via a small handheld magnet. Configuration and routine calibration are intuitive and menu driven with fully scripted instructions. The intelligent transmitter module features dual redundant outputs; a linear 4-20 milliamp analog signal and a Modbus RS-485 serial output. Product options include a Remote Alarm Module (RAM), HART, Foundation Fieldbus, and wireless. Additional approvals include CE, ATEX, CSA, CEPEL and GOST.

Optimised Gas Leak Detection
The FLIR Systems (France) range of GF-Series Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) cameras are proven to provide reliable, top performance leak detection across a growing range of applications.
GF-Series optical gas imaging cameras display a gas leak as a plume of vapour in the captured infrared image. Once a leak is found you can use your TVA to quantify the concentration.
Optical imaging of gas leaks using FLIR GF-Series OGI cameras is inherently safe as the technique enables you to scan for leaks remotely from a ‘safe zone’. The OGI technology used in FLIR GF Series cameras offers tangible benefits compared to traditional "gas sniffers" because they scan a broader area much more rapidly and can detect leaks in areas that are difficult to reach with contact measurement tools. Typically gas leaks occur in less than 1% of the components in a plant or refinery, consequently using a GF-Series OGI camera provides enormous savings in terms of time and personnel as well as minimising loss of production. In addition to these advantages – OGI technology is now under final consideration as a tool for enabling industry to comply with new industrial emissions regulations & procedures as set by the new IED (Industrial Emissions Directive) within the EU.
