Flow Level Pressure 15 $67 Million In Valve Technologies Contracts Awarded
Emerson Process Management has been awarded contracts by Chevron Australia Pty Ltd which are valued at US $67 million (Euros 50 million) to provide control valves and valve actuators to help ensure the efficient and safe flow of natural gas at the Gorgon Project, one of the world’s largest natural gas projects.
Emerson Process Management is providing the majority of the control and shutdown valves for this natural gas project.
Emerson’s valve and valve automation technologies provide the ability to accurately manage the production of gas, resulting in tighter and more accurate control that increases overall system efficiency and safety, and helps ensure environmental compliance. Fisher FIELDVUE digital valve controllers provide automated configuration as well as improved control valve calibration and tuning. Their built-in diagnostics enable technicians to remotely monitor the health of a valve assembly and can alert them to pending issues before they affect operations.
"Our customers are undertaking increasingly larger and more complex projects in challenging on-shore and off-shore sites, where they require sophisticated, reliable gas flow solutions," said Steve Sonnenberg, president of Emerson Process Management. "Prior to installation, we were able to verify the performance of highly critical valves that will be used at Gorgon, through real-world flow testing at the Emerson Innovation Center in Marshalltown, Iowa, USA - the largest flow facility in the world capable of providing this kind of reliability testing."
The contracts include over 1000 control valves, valve controllers and actuators for applications ranging from inlet gas processing, acid gas removal, liquefaction and fractionation, to anti-surge and cryogenic. The wide scope of applications is matched by various valve materials, to withstand harsh conditions, extreme changes in pressure, and corrosive environments. Severe service conditions within many of the processes are met by a high number of Fisher noise reduction and anti-cavitation trims.
Additionally, Emerson’s Roxar subsea wet gas meters will be used to provide real-time, accurate measurements of hydrocarbon flow rates and water production.
In addition to support from Emerson Process Management’s engineering, development and manufacturing facilities in Australia, Emerson is working with its local business partner of 20 years, Perth-based Western Process Controls, to provide training that will help the Gorgon Project’s instrument and valve technicians, ensure smooth commissioning and maintenance best practices.

25626pr@reply-direct.com On-Line Termowell Sizing Calculator
Endress+Hauser (USA) introduces a free on-line thermowell calculation tool to help customers stay compliant with the new ASME PTC 19.3 TW- 2010 thermowell standards.
The thermowell sizing tool calculates the thermowell’s ability to withstand stresses under given process conditions, important for safety- critical or demanding applications with high flow rates or high process pressures, particularly in the oil and gas and chemical industry.
Because a thermowell is subjected to a variety of stresses in these types of applications, typically because of in-line and transverse vibrations, it is necessary to run calculations on the thermowell design to make sure these stresses do not exceed the maximum allowable limit. Endress+Hauser’s thermowell sizing calculator gives users a safe alternative to not only thermowell failure but loss of measurement,
damage to expensive equipment, and safety risks to plant personnel.
Unlike the traditional, time-consuming approach of using spreadsheets, the thermowell sizing calculator allows users to make preliminary calculations to select the right thermowell early on in the design process – in just a few clicks.
Enrichments in the thermowell calculation tool include a larger variety of thermowell geometries, such as stepped thermowells, and the updated ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2010 standards have enhanced resonant frequency calculations allowing the maximum thermowell length to be determined based upon the process conditions.
The thermowell calculation tool is available on-line via the Endress+Hauser Applicator tool, a program that provides step- by-step assistance with product selection, sizing, and configuration.
Also available on-line is a new white paper titled, “Basics of Thermowell Design and Selection,” that discusses thermowell design considerations, how to perform thermowell calculations, and options for selecting the right thermowell.

Modular Distribution Manifolds are Configurable for Individual Applications
A choice of three styles of modular fluid distribution manifold, backed by a factory configuration service, has been announced by the Instrumentation Products Division of Parker Hannifin (UK) – global specialists in motion and control technologies.
Parker's new manifold range supports a wide range of applications, from the distribution and control of low pressure instrument air or plant air, to high pressure instrument or hydraulic applications operating at up to 6000 PSI.
Two of the distribution manifold options are based on ball valves for quick on-off actuation and control. A further option offers a needle valve manifold, to suit applications
that might require lower flow rates or more precise control, or compact construction. The first of the ball valve options, the Hi-Pro Distribution Manifold, is based on a 10 mm orifice
version of Parker's Hi-Pro ball valve - which is rated for pressures up to 6000 PSI. Up to 20 of these 316 stainless steel valves can be factory-assembled to order by Parker onto the distribution manifold base. Users can also specify other build options including fitting a purge valve.
A similar style of manifold is available for lower pressure air distribution applications. This version - the Hi-Pro Air Header Manifold - provides up to 20 Hi-Pro 10 mm ball valves mounted onto on a distribution manifold body made from a two- inch 316 stainless steel pipe with either a flanged or threaded inlet at one end. The manifold is rated for pressures up to 800 PSI depending on the options specified.
Parker's third option - H Series Distribution Manifold - provides a compact manifold body that accepts a user-defined choice of five or 10 metal-seated needle valves - rated for pressures up to 6000 PSI. Users can also specify numerous build options including the addition of a single isolate valve connected to the inlet.
