Laboratory Products 41 Laboratory Tools for Sustainable Synthetic Organic Chemistry

Asynt reports that it has supplied Redbrick Molecular Ltd with a wide range of synthetic organic chemistry equipment for its new environmentally responsible laboratory. Owned by an expandable group of leading UK universities, Redbrick Molecular has unparalleled access to intellectual property generated by these partners allowing them to produce novel strategic building blocks and organic fragments that are attractive to industrial medicinal chemists. Working closely with advisories from within the pharmaceutical industry the company is uniquely placed to produce the highest value compounds that enable its customers to develop novel drug candidates in new and protectable areas of chemical space.

Dan Cox, Lead Chemist at Redbrick Molecular said: “We set up our lab from scratch and needed to invest in the equipment to carry out synthetic chemistry. Oil baths not only present a fire hazard and create problems in terms of keeping glassware and fume cupboards clean, but they can also introduce a potential source of contamination to synthetic products. The Asynt DrySyn heating block range provide a much safer and cleaner way of heating reactions and came highly recommended to us.”

Dr Cox added: “We have been using our DrySyn heating blocks in combination with an Asynt CondenSyn air condenser to reflux a variety of solvents. Using the CondenSyn vastly reduces our water waste and not having to use water hoses also saves on space within the fume cupboard and there is no need to worry about leaks or floods. Unlike a traditional Liebig condenser, the CondenSyn air condenser is much more convenient to move from one fume cupboard to another (without the need for detachment of hoses and the draining of water) and can easily be cleaned. We were also very conscious of getting the most out of our fume cupboard space and in that regard the Asynt DrySyn MULTI is perfect as it allows us to heat 3 reactions on a single stirrer hotplate. All in all, Asynt has provided us with the products and support to undertake a wide range of synthetic reactions sustainably.”

New Programmable Pump ideal for OEM Instrument Integration

The Intelligent Programmable Pump from Fluid Metering, Inc combines FMI’s precision valveless STH Stepper Pump with integral programmable driver in a compact design ideal for integration with OEM instrumentation. The driver provides precision servo control of the STH pumps stepper motor for resonance-free, quite operation. Having 5 programmable inputs and 2 outputs, the Intelligent Pump is compatible with multiple programming platforms including, Visual Basic, C/C++, Delphi, LabView. Analogue 0-5 VDC, RS-232, and CANopen protocol are supported with an optional EtherCAT communication module available.

The Programmable Driver and Stepper provide precision control of FMI’s CeramPump® integral valveless piston pump. FMI’s CeramPump® technology features only one moving part, a sapphire-hard ceramic

piston, in contact with fluid. The rotating and reciprocating piston accomplishes both the pumping and valving functions effectively eliminating check valves present in conventional reciprocating piston and diaphragm pump designs.

44724@reply-direct.com Custom Designed Controlled Environment Curing System Announced

Laboratory safety cabinet and enclosure manufacturer Bigneat Ltd has installed a custom designed and manufactured controlled environment system to answer the specific needs of a leading transfusion diagnostics company.

The company has developed an innovative diagnostic system that will allow automated blood type testing and disease screening, providing significant clinical benefits - significant savings in testing costs and rapid results.

The system utilises highly characterised antigen and antibody panels which require a critical manufacturing process. One step is the precise controlled rate of drying of a liquid solution which provides a solid protective coating.

Bigneat was tasked with coming up with a custom design for a controlled environment drying system made up of multiple drying pods, each with independent controls and constant monitoring of the process parameters. The system would be installed in a clean room environment following the strict guidelines of GMP regulations. The main criteria for the drying phase was to achieve a curing time of 3-4 hours per pod.

The system Bigneat designed and manufactured has 12 independently operating pods, each provided with uniform, very dry clean air and with fully automated operation. A regulated dehumidifier and cooling system develops the controlled dry atmosphere and the system features state-of-the-art electronics which constantly monitors the environment parameters and boasts a large MMI touch screen control panel for ease of operator use.

The collated process data is stored in the memory of the PLC controller which has direct connection with the company’s Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to transfer and store critical data such as manufacturing recipes and alarms.

Commenting on the system development Bigneat’s General Manager of Containment Solutions, Stephen Pratt, said: “We worked closely with our client every step of the way to design and supply a fully operational solution, it’s been a challenging and enjoyable process.” He added: “We are increasingly being asked for special designs to solve customer specific process needs and its one of the most enjoyable aspects of what we do.”
