Mass Flow Controllers Powers MDC’s XpressStick Gas Delivery Module

Amplifying nucleic acids for further downstream processing is a cornerstone of modern molecular biology and medical research. This temperature dependent process needs utmost precision in temperature control. At the same time, the procedure needs to be as fast as possible, i.e. temperature changes need to be facilitated at high speeds.
The Mastercycler X50 from Eppendorf combines the capabilities of high speed (Heating of 10°C/s) with utmost precision (±0.15°C). High speeds, especially in cooling, can be supported by large heat sinks and strong ventilation. However, large footprints and strong ventilation noises need to be avoided in molecular biology labs. Thus, product design features like ventilating from front to back (and not to the sides where other instruments can be placed) and including powerful heat sinks in small footprints have to be brought to perfection.

Alicat Scientific’s MCE mass flow controllers have been integrated into MDC Vacuum Products’ XpressStick™ MFC Gas Stick. With precision control of gas flows of up to 20SLPM and onboard display, Alicat’s MCE provides gas programming functionality to the gas connection module, which links pressurised gas inputs to vacuum chambers.
The all-in-one design of the XpressStick MFC gas stick eliminates complex hardware specification in processes which include a combination of specialty gases, pressure, precise regulation, and vacuum. Its easy programming and precise gas control system allows users to go from bottle to process in one simple step. Designed to meet ultra-high purity process requirements, the XpressStick is also offered in a stainless steel model for corrosive environments.

With the MCE’s zero warm up time, the XpressStick is ready to control process flows in just one second, with real time mass flow, volumetric flow, absolute pressure and temperature data, fully compensated for temperature and pressure. The gas module is programmed directly through the MCE’s integrated display, with easy changes to gas type using the on-board gas calibrations.
The standard gas calibration list includes 98 gases, with an additional 32 corrosive gases on the stainless steel model. Alicat’s built-in COMPOSER™ gas mixing software can be used to compose up to twenty additional custom blends using the standard gas list. Accuracy is virtually unaffected by change in gas type, and full-scale valve range is automatically recalibrated to maintain throughput ranges.

New Brochure Features a Wide Range of Autoclaves and Media Preparators
Systec GmbH’s new product brochure is available now. The brochure has been redesigned and provides an overview of the wide product range of autoclaves and media preparators available. Customers can choose from over 70 different autoclaves, with chamber volumes ranging from 23 to 1580 litres, universal installation options as floor standing and bench-top units and numerous additional options.

The new Wiggens DVR 480 is a multifunctional vacuum controller for connection to existing pumps or vacuum networks. As all the parts come into contact with gases or condensate are made of PTFE or highly anti-corrosive ceramics, the controller can be used for corrosive applications. The advanced electronic technology significantly increases the efficiency of lab process, such as vacuum-stat process inside the chemical reactors, solvent recovery on a rotary evaporator, as well as environment protection. It is so easy to control the vacuum precisely from 0.1 mbar to 1000 mbar, DVR480 supports the programming of up to 5-step control, which is suitable for distillation operations, especially for the applications with dual or more boiling points distillation. Heavy Metal on a Tungsten Basis with High Radiation Absorption Capacity Offers an Ecological Alternative to Toxic Lead
EU Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2) regulates the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Lead, which is often used as radiation shielding or for anti-scatter grids, is ranked at the top of the list, even higher than mercury and cadmium. The Bavarian company Wolfram Industrie offers an innovative, more environmentally friendly alternative with Triamet, a heavy metal alloy on a tungsten basis: thanks to its specific high density and the resulting radiation absorption capacity, the dimensionally stable product even shields against gamma radiation.
Due to the high melting point of Triamet at more than 1,000°C, which is much higher compared to lead, there is no risk of melting in case of a fire. However, only powder-metallurgical processing is possible due to this special characteristic: for the production of Triamet, tungsten powder is mixed with iron and nickel or copper and nickel powders. Subsequent shaping is either realised hydraulically with binding agents and a press, or isostatically under great pressure of 2,000 to 3,000 bar. The former is suitable for smaller dimensions, the latter for large-scale components.
The density of Triamet is declared at G19 and is about 18.8 ± 0.2 g/cm3. A maximum density of 19.3 can be achieved with pure tungsten – which in fact is about 8 g/cm3 higher than lead. The lower the proportion of the binder phase the higher the density will be.
A mixture of tungsten granulate and epoxy resin is used as a backing material in ultrasound heads (transducers) to minimise interfering acoustic reflections. Here the acoustic impedance of the backing material is increased by adding tungsten. Triamet is used in radiation therapy to shield against hard gamma radiation. Radioactive seeds that are delivered to a tumour and subsequently removed again during HDR brachytherapy can be stored in containers made of Triamet. Shielding phials for radiopharmaceuticals to reduce the radiation exposure of employees constitute another possible application. It is also suitable for isotope containers thanks to its dimensional stability that ensures easy cleaning and sterilisation. Tungsten is atoxic and not environmentally hazardous according to its RoHS conformity, so that no coating is required.
