Multi-Sample Micro-Osmometer for Automated Osmolality Testing Introduced Advanced Instruments have introduced their new OsmoPRO multi sample osmometer.

OsmoPRO is a 20-position, micro-sample osmometer designed specifically to address the changing needs of today’s busy laboratories, improve efficiency, and reduce sample turnaround time.

Ideal for sample-limited applications, OsmoPRO uses a small 20 µL sample size. Samples can be analysed one at a time, or batch processed depending on workflow demands. OsmoPRO uses the industry-preferred freezing point depression method to deliver results in just 2 minutes.

A versatile piece of laboratory equipment for any laboratory setting, OsmoPRO is able to analyse a variety of complex aqueous mixtures including blood, serum, plasma, urine, stool, cell culture media, drug formulations, and biological cell therapies. Time saving features, like the ability to run tests unattended, automated processing of up to 20 samples, and the intuitive touchscreen, were designed to enable laboratory professionals the ability to manage their time effectively.

“The OsmoPRO was designed with a set of usability, connectivity, and software control features consistent with the demands of today’s overworked, highly regulated laboratories,” said Byron Selman, CEO of Advanced Instruments.

OsmoPRO’s integrated 2-D barcode scanner provides positive sample identification to reduce transcription errors. Data management and transfer can be handled via the on-board printer or by easily exporting the data using the Ethernet connection or multiple USB ports.

“The OsmoPRO, which replaced the Model 2020 osmometer, has received great reviews since its launch,” said Byron Selman. “The Model 2020 was an extremely popular and reliable osmometer used in thousands of laboratories. Our new product represents Advanced Instruments’ commitment to innovation in the field of osmometry, while maintaining the same product quality and reliability. We have expanded the product’s data management and communication features in response to evolving daily requirements in busy laboratories around the world.”

OsmoPRO can be used in a variety of laboratory applications including clinical diagnostics, formulation development, bioprocess monitoring and process control, industrial, environmental, and finished product quality control.

3-part Differential Haematology Analyser Announced

Diatron, a global provider of haematology and clinical chemistry analysers, exhibited its newly available Aquila 3-part differential haematology analyser (60 samples /hour throughput) at Medica 2017.

The Aquila can be used in many testing locations where high-quality complete blood count (CBC) results are desired. Diatron’s latest technology provides an optimal testing solution for both the experienced and inexperienced user, and practices which require a high-quality haematology analysers.

Specifically designed for the de-centralised laboratory and near-patient testing situations, this small analyser has low reagent consumption (<12ml), requires only a small sample size (20ul) and has a unique on-board reagent pack (sufficient for approximately 200 measurement cycles). With a small footprint, the analyser can be used in many locations, including small laboratories and in point-of-care applications. The low instrument reagent consumption coupled with its on-board reagent pack ensure that the shipping, storage and usage of reagents deliver enhanced ease of use as well as significant cost reductions.

The newly available analyser, while requiring little bench space, features a large touch screen, an intuitive user interface, an optional back-up battery pack and extended connectivity options.

New Yellow Fever Virus Recombinant Protein for Diagnostic Testing Launched

Aalto Bio Reagents have announced the availability of its first-to-market recombinant Yellow Fever virus (YFV) protein (code CA 6325) for diagnostic test manufacturers, vaccine developers and researchers globally. This His- tagged, recombinant protein is expressed in HEK293 cells and is derived from strain 17D. YFV, a potentially fatal mosquito-borne flavivirus, is prevalent in tropical and subtropical locations in South America and Africa.

YFV is transmitted to humans mainly by sylvatic mosquito vectors of the genera Haemagogus and Sabethes, but has also been known to be spread by the sinister Aedes aegypti mosquito which is responsible for the current Zika virus epidemic. In humans, the majority of YFV infections are asymptomatic; however approximately 15% of infected patients enter what is known as the toxic phase and this can lead to severe complications such as jaundice, multi- organ failure and even death.

Laboratory diagnosis is generally accomplished by means of serological testing for the detection of antibodies during the postviremic phase of the disease (i.e. from the 5th day since the onset of symptoms). YFV is difficult to diagnose, especially in the early stages, as cross-reaction with other flavivirus infections is common. There are no validated IgM ELISA kits commercially available at present and in order for YFV infection to be confirmed by serologically techniques, a differential diagnosis with other flavivirus infections must be carried out.

Philip Noone, CEO of Aalto Bio Reagents, said “Brazil is currently experiencing its largest YFV outbreak in decades. There is an urgent need for a specific and sensitive serological YFV assay in countries such as Brazil, where co-circulation with other flaviviruses is high. Our industry has an unrelenting requirement for access to the most scientifically proven raw materials, a broader range of flexible controls and faster diagnostics. With our Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue Triplex and now our Yellow Fever solution we are truly building a comprehensive tropical product listing to meet this need. We envisage that our YFV protein will provide the critical element to further diagnostic companies’ research and development of IgG and potentially IgM assays. We will continue to focus on the expansion of our tropical disease products with even more additions in 2017-18 to enable our customers to bring superior, best-in-class diagnostic products to market faster, and aid in the development of life-saving vaccines.”
