Straightforward Determination of Anhydrosugars in Aerosols

Metrohm presents a new method for the sensitive and robust routine determination of the «smoke markers» levoglucosan, mannosan and galactosan in aerosols.

The method couples ion chromatography with a highly sensitive pulsed amperometric detector (IC-PAD) and provides a simple and less expensive alternative to GC/MS. As such, it facilitates research into the effects of biomass burning aerosols on meteorological phenomena and on the climate in general.

Anhydrosugars are thermal degredation products of cellulose and hemicellulose. They form an important fraction of water-soluble organic carbon in atmospheric aerosols and thus have a great potential of affecting, among others, cloud formation and precipitation and thus the climate in general.

The analytical method couples ion chromatography with a highly sensitive pulsed amperometric detector (IC-PAD). In the test, a Metrosep A Supp 15 – 150 was coupled to a Metrosep Carb 1 – 150. The calibration for the anhydrosugars and sugar alcohols is linear over a wide concentration range. Less than 17 minutes were needed to achieve separation with a limit of detection (LOD) for levoglucosan of approximately 5 ng/m3

.

For sample preparation, the aerosol fraction of a defined air volume is collected on a filter. Before extraction, this filter is divided in samples of a standardised size. After addition of ultrapure water, the filters are treated by ultrasonic extraction for about 30 minutes. Prior to injection, the samples are either filtrated through a syringe filter or by using Metrohm’s Inline Ultrafiltration.

Intelligent Management of Titration Data

Titration was Never Easier

Powerful as a PC, smaller than a Netbook and as easy to use as an iPhone – these are the main features of the 900 Touch Control. Users of Metrohm’s new benchtop control module start their titrimetric analyses with a single touch. The brilliant colour display provides for a stunning visual experience and due to the device’s network capability the full range of laboratory data communication possibilities is available. Up to 14 methods can each be linked to a favourite icon on the touchscreen. Whether one, two or more users – each one has direct access to his or her most important methods and starts them with a single touch of the respective icon. What used to require a PC is now possible with the 900 Touch Control due to advanced microelectronics. An Ethernet interface provides direct access to the intranet. Reports can be printed on any network printer or saved on a network storage or an external hard disk. Moreover, results and other data can be sent directly to any LIMS or – in a stand-alone solution – saved on the spot in the system’s archive.

Further features of the 900 Touch Control: • USB-interface for printer, keyboard or mouse. Methods and determinations can be directly saved on a memory stick and read in again from there. • PDF-generator for creating forge-proof reports • Automatic electrode test for always reliable results. • Autostart function: coulometric Karl-Fischer titrations are started automatically once sample is added. • User dialogue in many languages including Chinese. • Compliance with FDA-regulation 21 CFR, Part 11.

tiBase brings database functionality to Metrohm’s Titrino plus and Titrando titrators. The new software enables the straightforward transfer of titration determinations via USB memory stick to a PC where the data can be stored, administrated, reprocessed and protected against any manipulation.

Database functionality, previously only available in Metrohm’s high-end range of instruments, is now also available in Metrohm’s entry level range, namely the Titrino plus titrators. tiBase comes with a multitude of data management functions such as archiving, easy data import and export, search and filter functions, reprocessing and freely definable report formats.

tiBase provides for extensive data security. Not only determinations, but all settings, methods and user information are stored in the database and protected against wilful manipulation or loss. tiBase Multi is the client-server version of the new software and enables central data administration by way of client-server option.
