ACM Global Central Laboratory has announced the newest member of its Clinical Trials team, Nandan Rao (pictured above) as the General Manager, Asia Pacific, located in Mumbai, India. Initially, Rao will have oversight of trials conducted with ACM Global’s partner lab in the region. He will also be building the ACM Global infrastructure and team throughout Asia Pacific, as a result of increased demand.

Rao has had an impressive career comprised of both sales and operational responsibilities with pharmaceutical, diagnostic and services organisations. Most recently, he held the position of General Manager with SRL, the largest clinical reference laboratory network in India and Southeast Asia, where he was instrumental in building the clinical trials operations. “I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with ACM Global for the past four years and witnessed their growth in India,” said Rao, “I am delighted to be spearheading their efforts in this region, which demonstrates ACM Global’s commitment to its clients.”

“Since establishing our presence in India in 2006, ACM has become a global leader in the central lab arena,” said Elena Logan, VP of Clinical Trials at ACM Global Central Lab. “Adding Nandan to our team marks a very important stage of our growth as India has become a critical market within the clinical trials industry.”

Award-winning Pioneer in Nanoscience Research Visits Jeol USA

Dr Iijima’s accomplishments are many, beginning with his groundbreaking work at Arizona State University and later at the Research Development Corporation of Japan and at NEC. He produced the first atomic resolution micrographs with the HRTEM, characterised the structure of crystalline solids and imaged small clusters in the structure of gold particles. He looked at short-range order in carbon specimens and his micrographs validated the structure of C60. In 1991, he published a paper on the crystalline structure of carbon nanotubes.

Nanoscience owes much to the discoveries of world- renowned physicist Dr Sumio Iijima, who pioneered the use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) to characterise nanomaterials in the early 70s and successfully imaged carbon nanotubes in the early 90s. Although he has used Jeol TEMs for the past four decades, Dr Iijima visited Jeol USA this March for the first time following a speaking engagement at MIT’s Center for Materials Science and Engineering.

The discovery of carbon nanotubes has fuelled intense research in nanoscience and transformed knowledge of materials that are developed to benefit society. “Science is always looking for something new,” Dr Iijima mused. “Like the discovery of the transistor, small things become giant and the seeds begin to grow.”

“We’re honoured to have such a distinguished leader in the field of nanoscience visit with us,” said Bob Santorelli, CEO of JEOL USA, who hosted the visit along with Shinichi Watanabe, Chairman; Peter Genovese, President; and Hisao Wada, Vice President. Iijima is currently a professor at Meijo University, Director of the AIST/Nanotube Research Center, Senior Research Fellow at NEC, and Dean of Sungkyunkwan Advanced Institute of Nanotechnology in Seoul, Korea.

A custom LED testing installation from light metrology industry leader, Labsphere, has been chosen by the Shanghai Research Centre of Engineering and Technology for Solid-State Lighting for its LED life measurement lab.

The Institute supplies LED testing services to local manufacturers of solid state lighting. The powerful system is the first of its kind in China, with potential to become the national standard in LED testing. Labsphere’s high performance and strong local support were the deciding factors for the Institute in selecting its system. Locally made systems currently offer testing of only one parameter of a

single, low-power LED at a time. The integrated system from Labsphere is able to perform a variety of optical and electrical test measurements on an array of up to 20 discrete LEDs, including high power lamps, in under 60 seconds.

Labsphere’s life test station will enable the Institute to quickly and accurately test new products for its clients, increasing the reliability and energy performance of solid state lighting used in street lighting, architectural lighting and outdoor signage. There are no national standards for LED testing in China currently. The Institute hopes that this new system will bridge the gap left by traditional

methods of LED testing to become the first national standard. “The Labsphere system is ideal as we will be able to upgrade it for certain applications.

The system is also tailored specifically to new solid state lighting sources,” said Steven Li, the Institute’s General Evaluation Lab Manager. Per Roger Xiao, Asia Pacific Sales Director of Labsphere, a key reason the Institute selected Labsphere is, “Labsphere can commit to the customer that we can help them with customisation of software locally; also both parties can cooperate on building a SSL test and measurement platform that complies with international industry trends.”

Malvern Instruments has expanded its team serving the particle characterisation market in China with the appointment of Terry Liu (pictured above) to the role of Process Specialist. Terry is part of the Malvern China team and works from the company’s Shanghai office. He will support customers across a range of industries in their implementation of Insitec in- on- and at-line solutions for particle size measurement and process optimisation.

A graduate of the Nanjing University of Technology, Terry Liu has a degree in instrument and automation. Before joining Malvern he worked at the Tianjin Institute of Chemical Engineering Design and has experience working with industry automation and petrochemical projects.

Terry will also be involved in delivering Malvern’s consultancy service. Offered on a fixed fee basis, this combines an in situ plant trial of the Insitec system with expert advice. Such a trial over several days allows customers to fully explore the potential benefits of real- time monitoring on their own process and quantify payback times with confidence, ahead of investing in on-line technology.
