CHROMATOGRAPHY & SPECTROSCOPY

Transient Mass Spectrometer Provides for Fast Event Gas Analysis Studies

Hiden Analytical introduce their Transient MS system specifically designed for the analysis of fast transient gas events at pressures near atmosphere. The compact benchtop system is founded on the Hiden HPR-20 QIC series gas analysers and features a purpose-designed fast response capillary inlet and the HAL/3F PIC mass spectrometer with pulse ion counting detector. The combination enables inlet system response times of less the 150 msec with measurement speeds of up to 500 data points per second over an entire 7 decade dynamic range. The system monitors species with molecular weights to 300 amu, with higher mass ranges available for specialist applications.

The MASsoft control and data acquisition program provides ease of operation with integral calibration routines together with user-programmable template files for automatic operation of routine analyses. Multiple I/O's permit integration of external parameters such as temperature or flow rates, and control of external equipment with species-specific pressure level sensors.

Application areas include pulsed gas experiments for catalyst characterisation, surface reaction and reduction studies, respiratory analysis, process control and, with high-speed rotating multiport valve, spacial gas distribution measurement as demonstrated in the award-winning (R&D 100 Awards) Hiden Spaci-MS system.

Ultraviolet Radiation Spectrometer

Quickly and easily measure vacuum ultraviolet spectral emission - signature emission from He, Ar, Xe, N2 and O2 and even many corrosive fluoride or chloride-based mixtures, in experiments as diverse as: plasma process

mapping (semiconductor etch plasma formation and distribution); fluorescence (nano- materials, doped crystals); luminescence (phosphor characteristics); and VUV photoemission.

McPherson’s vacuum ultraviolet spectrometer, Model 234/302, is now complete with sensitive, cooled, scientific grade CCD detectors. The compact 200mm focal length spectrometer has adjustable slits, and operates at f/4.5, providing fast, sensitive data collection from ultraviolet radiation and emission spectra in the 100 to 190 nanometer wavelength range simultaneously, in near real time, with sub- nanometer spectral resolution. Tune the grating to longer or shorter wavelengths to collect different wavelength swaths. Various models of cooled, back illuminated and windowless sensors fit directly to the focal plane for direct detection of vacuum ultraviolet spectra.

PITTCON NEWS

Zoex Corporation recently announced the FasTOF, a high resolution TOF mass spectrometer, specifically designed for comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography applications. The FasTOF is sold as a system bundle including the Agilent 7890 GC, the Zoex thermal modulator, and the Zoex HiResTOFMS module. FasTOF is equipped with a unique, patent pending mass calibration system. Calibrant material is pulsed into the ion source in synchrony with the GC x GC modulation cycle.

This permits the mass scale to be fully recalibrated every few seconds throughout an analytical run, with no interferences between the calibrant material and analyte ions. The result is the most stable and accurate mass measurements: +/- 0.0007 Th (1 Thompson is approximately 1 amu) of any instrument in its class. Elemental composition assignments are routine with this instrument, which is targeted at complex mixture analyses in metabolomics, environmental forensics, flavours/fragrances, petroleum liquids, and other demanding applications.

HPLC System Upgrade Dionex Corp is pleased to release the industry-leading Corona®

and RSLC systems. Charged Aerosol Detection® (CAD®

ultra™ Charged Aerosol Detector for the Dionex UltiMate®

3000 HPLC ) has broad applicability across a wide array of applications. The Corona ultra can

detect any non-volatile and many semi-volatile analytes independent of chemical structure, with or without a chromophore. This makes CAD useful for analytes ranging from small molecule pharmaceutical APIs and counterions to large molecules such as polymers and proteins. It is ideal for lipids using liquid chromatography where the wide variety of structures and widely varying UV response present an analytical challenge. The power of CAD lies in its versatility and ease of implementation. With integration into the UltiMate system, these capabilities are now available in an advanced HPLC system.

The redesigned Corona ultra is fully integrated into the UltiMate 3000 systems. Both detector and system are controlled by the Dionex Chromeleon®

Chromatography Data System (patent pending) software. With the analytical capability of the UltiMate 3000 RSLC systems,

the ease of use of Chromeleon software, and the speed and low peak dispersion of the Corona ultra detector, this is an ideal combination for throughput, resolution and detection for all application where universal detection provides the answer to an analytical problem.
