Incubators, Freezers & Cooling Equipment Looking Cool
UK manufacturer, LTE Scientific has recently launched a brand new and improved family of cooled incubators to replace its Qualicool range.
The stylish new IC range combines contemporary cabinet design with solid, reliable performance. In addition, all models use refrigerants R290 and R600a which have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 3. This compared with lower energy consumption will help lower running costs whilst reducing your carbon footprint.
Accurate temperature performance and space-efficient storage capacities are key features of the new IC range. All IC Cooled Incubators incorporate a quiet and effective fan circulation system which distributes the air evenly throughout the chamber. All models are designed to operate between +2ºC and +50ºC.
4 sizes are available, and all models can be supplied with either a white epoxy coated or stainless steel exterior finish. Additionally all models can also be
supplied with double-glazed glass doors. Interiors are high impact-resistant and durable ABS. The entire range also has a one piece door seal which can be easily removed making the whole cabinet extremely easy to clean.
A major feature of the benchtop/underbench IC200 model is its impressive usable chamber capacity of 92-litres, which makes it one of the largest under-bench cooled incubators available. In addition, the IC200 range can be stacked, thus making good use of floor area in the laboratory. The IC400 has an impressive 294-litre capacity yet it only takes up 595mm x 640mm floor area.
For easy maneuverability, IC400 and IC600 models are supplied on castors as standard.
IC Cooled Incubators are controlled via an electronic PID controller providing close temperature control and variation throughout the chambers. For added safety, over-temperature protection is provided via a class 2 limiter.
MORE INFO. 60 Controlling Nucleation on Production Freeze Dryers
SP Scientific has announced that ControLyo™ Nucleation On-Demand Technology can now be retrofitted to a wide range of previously installed production freeze dryers.
The ControLyo™ technology, patented by Praxair Inc, was licensed exclusively by SP Scientific in 2010 for use on development freeze dryers with shelf surface areas < 1.0 sq.-m. The technology was incorporated into the SP Scientific Lyostar 3 freeze dryer, the first commercial dryer to offer controlled nucleation capability.
Since that time, considerable research has been done at the development scale with controlled nucleation. ControLyo™ technology offers many benefits to freeze drying in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries including improved vial-to-vial uniformity, reduced cycle times, easier process scale-up, reduced protein aggregation and better conformance to the Food & Drug Administration's Process Analytical technology (PAT), and Quality by Design (QBD) Initiatives.
In order for the benefits demonstrated in development work to offer economic benefits to companies, the technology has to be scalable to production freeze dryers. SP Scientific and Praxair have demonstrated that many commercial production dryers can be relatively quickly and easily retrofitted to benefit from the advantages offered by ControLyo™ technology. It has also been demonstrated on production freeze dryers as large as 300ft2. (27m2), that controlled nucleation was achieved in nearly 9000 vials, ranging in size from 20ml to 100ml with fill volumes of ¼ and ½. Economical retrofits and scalability of the technology open opportunities to significantly improve production cycles of lyophilised products, with concomitant reduction in costs.

The new SI600 high capacity shaking incubator for cell culture applications with built-in orbital shaker has a capacity of 115 litres - more than double that of the existing SI500 - and can accommodate up to six 2 litre Erlenmeyer flasks. Both of these benchtop systems are equipped with Biocote antimicrobial protection and are ideal for use in cell culture, especially suspension culture applications, with the larger SI600 supporting growing demands for larger scale production.
The SI600 incubator is designed for reliable, convenient operation. Like the SI500 it includes a unique retractable platform for effortless loading and unloading. Under normal use the platform is locked in place but can be drawn forward from the chamber to give easy to access to samples at the back. Accurate maintenance of a stable and uniform temperature is essential for reliable results over extended periods. Microprocessor control delivers long-term temperature stability, with forced air circulation ensuring uniformity throughout the incubator.
Separate control of temperature and shaker speed guards against accidental temperature adjustment, while USB enabled communication allows long term tracking of the incubator temperature.
Advanced Cooling for Flow Chemistry
Available from Uniqsis Ltd the FlowSyn Polar Bear™ is a state-of-the-art chiller unit which, in combination with FlowSyn Continuous Flow Reactor, allows you to perform and control reactions down to -88°C.
The FlowSyn Polar Bear™ provides faster and more efficient cooling than conventional chiller units and is ideal for pre-cooling reagents and controlling temperature in highly exothermic reactions. The system is compatible with the FlowSyn range of reactor modules and is designed to prevent ice formation so that you can clearly observe reactions as they occur.
Traditionally equipment for cooling flow chemistry reactions below -70°C has been cumbersome and inconvenient, involving pressurised gas cylinders and/or heat exchangers. With its fully integrated plug-and-play design, the Polar Bear™ is both easy to install and simple to operate, as well as providing superb cooling performance. The Polar Bear™ uses advanced cooling technology without the need for solid CO2, solvents or heat transfer fluids to deliver rapid cooling down to -88°C at the simple touch of a button.
The Polar Bear™ module is compatible with all Uniqsis coil reactors and mixer blocks and works in combination with and can be controlled by any FlowSyn flow reactor system. For highly exothermic reactions the Polar Bear Plus module is additionally compatible with Uniqsis’ proprietary mixer / reactor chip technology.

A wide range of stainless steel accessory racks is available with angle-adjustable holders for 1.5ml, 15ml and 50ml sample tubes. These racks magnetically couple to the orbiting platform so require no tools to fix into place. Additionally, the flexible sample platform can accommodate a variety of flasks without the need to add tulip clamps or use tools to secure.
"With life scientists under pressure to scale up production of cell growth, the ability to use larger flasks in the new SI600 enables researchers to increase their chances of success by being able to produce more cells," said Rob Skehens, Marketing Director of Bibby Scientific.
"The SI range is also equipped with BioCote® antimicrobial protection technology. This is a silver ion treatment that helps to reduce levels of bacterial contamination in laboratory equipment, and helps users conform to the principles of good laboratory practice (GLP)."
