The people didn’t believe him at first, but as time passed he did everything a good king should do.
“Why are you so much kinder, Sire?” they asked. “One day I was out hunting. I saw a fox steal a chicken from a poor man. As the fox ran away a dog chased him. The dog caught the fox and bit him on the leg. Now the fox will always limp. As the dog was going home, a man threw a stone and hit him, breaking his leg. Now the dog will always limp.
When the man threw the stone, he scared his horse. It threw him and he broke his leg. Now he will always limp.
I thought about what I had seen. I realised that anyone who hurts someone else will sooner or later be hurt in return. The opposite is true too. Anyone who helps someone will, sooner or later, be helped in turn. That is why I have become kinder – and why I am now much happier as well.”
