Activity 2 Read and view: a story

1 Before reading You are going to read a story about a king who learnt to care for his people. a. Scan the first line of each paragraph. What do you think the story will be about?

b. Now look at the pictures. Do they add to your prediction?

2 While reading Work out the meaning of difficult words by looking at the pictures and by reading the words around the difficult words. Example: The cruel king beat his servants.

The cruel king who became kind

Long ago there lived a very cruel king. He treated his subjects very badly. He would command them to do things all the time and beat them if they didn’t obey. They were afraid of him and wished he would die so that someone nicer could become king. One day he called his people together. “My people,” he said, “Nothing can make up for the cruel way I have treated you in the past. But from now on, I will be a good king.”

cruel: a person who is unkind and likes to hurt other people or animals

subjects: people who belong to a certain country or kingdom

Beat tells you that the king was unkind. So cruel must mean unkind.
