Understanding digital degree apprenticeships
Covid-19 has shone a spotlight on the importance of digital skills at work. Almost overnight, remote working has become the default setting for millions along with all that this entails, including navigating new technology. Dr Elmina Homapour, academic lead for apprentices in De Montfort University Leicester’s (DMU) computing, engineering and media faculty, explains why digital degree apprenticeships are more important than ever.
A
pprenticeships offer companies the perfect opportunity to enhance the digital skill set of their workforce, either by training existing employees or onboarding new talent, as well as improving productivity and motivation.
DMU is one of the leading providers for apprenticeships
in the region, drawing on decades of experience in providing vocational programmes tailored to business needs. Its digital expertise in AI, cyber security and computing have made it the natural choice for companies looking for apprenticeship courses in these fields. Apprentices are taught by DMU’s academic experts, who
bring the benefits of their cutting-edge research to the classroom. The content of the courses are informed by the university’s industry board, which includes companies such as IBM, Deloitte, Airbus and BT, to ensure that the skills match those needed by employers. Work-based assessments and projects relate directly to
practical challenges in your workplace, making the subject relatable as opposed to abstract.
UNPACKING DIGITAL DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS The university offers three distinct degree apprenticeships which focus on digital skills, with more set to be launched later this year. They are:

• Cyber security technical professional integrated degree apprenticeship: Apprentices will learn to lead cyber security research and analytical teams, instruct on how to manage risks, and design and develop secure solutions. They will also have access to DMU's specialised computer labs and expert academics in the field.
• Digital and technology solutions professional degree apprenticeship: This offers five unique specialisms, from cyber security analyst to network engineer, providing detailed knowledge in computing that fits the wider business world.
• Embedded electronic systems design and development engineer degree apprenticeship: Relevant to a wide range of industries such as robotics, aerospace, automotive and defence, this apprenticeship covers electronic and embedded software expertise and teaches apprentices how to design reliable, safe and cost- effective circuits and devices.
• Level 7 postgraduate engineer apprenticeship: This will enable learners to operate effectively and efficiently at a high level, and demonstrate strong analytical, synoptic and integrative abilities within a range of engineering sectors.
