AUGUST 2020 THE RIDER /25 Section 2

Oakhurst Farm completes first paperless scoring Horse Trials in North America using Compete Easy scoring

July 29, 2020 – Ashton, ON In March 2020, when

business and social life ground to a halt with the lockdown and states of emergency brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, horse shows were put out of mind and keeping horses and riders healthy, happy and engaged became the pri- ority. In early June as riding horses got back underway, Ruth Allum & Mark Nelson - owners of Oakhurst Farm in Ashton, ON came up with a challenge for the Oakhurst team: Let’s run Oakhurst’s scheduled Horse Trials on July 25 &26, 2020! At a time when running

a competition seemed an im- probable venture, the team jumped into the challenge with both feet and started planning. Oakhurst has run Horse Trials for 25+ years, but this one would be differ- ent. How do you run a con- tact free, safe and inviting event that local competitors can enjoy safely? Several changes would have to be made to the usual routine. As the team considered

how to run the event safely, one of the biggest questions was scoring. For example, let’s look

at the path a Dressage Test takes:

1. Printing by the secre-

tary or organizer for show day (human #1) 2. Sorting and labelling

for each judge’s clipboard (human #2) 3. Writing on by the scribe during the test (human #3) 4. Signing and comments by the judge (human #4) 5. Pickup by a runner to bring to Scorer (human #5) 6. Entry into Scoring system by Scorer (human #6) 7. Return to Show Secretary for handout to competitors (human #7) 8. Collection by rider (if lucky) or coach/friend/par- ent/neighbour, etc of written test (Human 8+)

Wait…8 people are

going to touch each dressage test. Minimum? What about cross country sheets…Show

and Helen was given a chal- lenge to find a solution to the paperwork madness that usually surrounds a Horse Trial.

In-house solutions

were proposed but would take a ridiculous amount of work to put in place, so the team started to look around for another solution. Ruth read an article online about a company in Australia – Nominate – who had a pa- perless dressage scoring app (Livescore Dressage) and urged Helen to take a look. This could solve part of the problem – the most paper heavy phase could be scored online. With a month to go be-

Jump judge sheets…printed pinney numbers...and course maps and ride times? This is a problem. Both a safety

and efficiency problem to be solved. Oakhurst’s event scoring is managed by Helen Richardson (Ruth’s sister)

fore the competition, Helen contacted the Nominate team and got very quick replies from them. After a Zoom call to see the Paper- less Dressage scoring app,

"Meet La Chapina! This 17.1 hh 4 year old filly has just started back under sad- dle and is looking for someone to take their time and develop her. She’s a quiet ride and super friendly. Due to a training injury she will be limited to low level

work (hacking, pleasure and low level dressage) but if brought along slowly and given time to grow into her massive frame she will likely be able to achieve low level hunters. If you are interested in meeting La Chapina......."
