The number of butterfly species in the UK, including 57 resident species of butterflies and two regular migrants – the Painted Lady and Clouded Yellow.

A butterfly’s eyes comprise 6,000 lenses and they can see ultraviolet light.


At Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, we have a giant atlas moth – a species with a wingspan which can grow up to 28cm.


Butterflies get their colours from two different sources: ordinary (or pigmented) colour and structural colour, which creates the effect of iridescence.


All butterflies have six legs and taste with their feet!


The Brimstone has the longest lifetime of adult butterflies – 9 to 10 months. The average life expectancy of a butterfly is typically about three to four weeks.
