Leisure centre refurb praised by health chiefs
Sheffield health chiefs have lauded the £500,000 refurbishment of a major city gym as the ‘start of something special’ following its official reopening. The large-scale revamp at SIV’s Hillsborough Leisure
Centre, on Beulah Road in the north west of the city, has brought a range of state-of-the-art health and fitness trends to the centre, which first opened in 1990. New features include the installation of a £50,000 Queenax functional training space, as well as a Wattbike training zone, plate-loaded resistance machines, and a performance area including prowler track, box master and boxing bag. The gym at Hillsborough Leisure Centre was officially
re-opened by Nicola Peck. Nicola was rehabilitated to a stable condition through SIV’s GP Referral Scheme at Hillsborough Leisure Centre with the venue’s Exercise Referral Specialist, Lynn Hird, after suffering from heart failure and atrial fibrillation in 2018. The investment comes as part of a long-term plan by Sheffield City Trust (SCT), the not-for-profit organisation which operates SIV, and Sheffield City Council to invest in and improve community health and leisure facilities across the city. SCT was established in 1990 with the sole aim of improving the health and

wellbeing of the people of Sheffield. The trust has been Sheffield City Council’s preferred partner for 30 years, and the organisations work together to deliver affordable, high-quality sports facilities for thousands of people in and around the city. Andrew Snelling, Chief Executive of SCT, said: “We’re
working closely with Sheffield City Council to develop a long-term plan for venues which have provided affordable, high-quality leisure facilities for the people of Sheffield and the surrounding areas for 30 years. “This refurbishment at Hillsborough Leisure Centre is

we’re urging as many companies as possible from across the borough to get involved. We raised £10,000 last year and we’re hoping to raise even more this year.” Barnsley Hospice provides
specialist care for anyone in the borough with a progressive, life- limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease.
