International Women’s Day & ATHENA International Awards 2020

Andrew Denniff, CEO at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce

Yorkshire and we must both embrace and play our part, with others, to ensure we get the best deal possible from devolution and that the benefits can be generated for as many businesses as possible. Looking a business and its place in society in

the broader context, more immediate challenges may well lie with the ever growing issues of the Coronavirus and its inevitable spread from China, and the impact that will have not only on international trade but indeed on worldwide travel generally. Combine this with the burgeoning concerns around the climate change agenda and there is certainly plenty for us to focus on during the weeks and months ahead. The Chamber’s main focus though over the

next few months will be on the Skills agenda. The key message we are getting from many of our members is to develop “buy in” to the notion of supporting the future workforce with a willingness and want to do something which is hugely positive. There is a huge demand for simplicity in the

wider Skills offer - while a key concern is navigating the marketplace, with the different asks, different opportunities and different stakeholders creating confusion, which in turn leads to inaction and a lot of misunderstanding around the part businesses are being asked to play. This is something we have been discussing for a number of years, we need to get it right this time around.
