approach. Some senior people may not be as approachable, or as available, as others in the business. There may also be individuals who would like the

training because they have an interest in the subject, perhaps because they have experienced mental health issues among friends or family. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they also have the resilience or objectivity required for the role. A great mental health

first aider is someone who is approachable and someone who will promote their services within the organisation once they have qualified, so that if someone is experiencing difficulties, they will feel comfortable confiding in them.

3 ‘A great mental

health first aider is someone who is approachable’

Share the load - It may be useful to have a selection of qualified mental health first aiders available to

employees. This can help share the load and prevent any one person taking on too much. Mental health first aiders can also set up a peer support network. Line managers should accept that mental health first

aiders may occasionally be called upon at short notice to help someone. If a few people are trained, this gives more options to those who need help, and makes it more likely that someone will be available.

4

Work hours - It could be a good idea to advise employees when they can access mental health first

aid, preferably only during working hours. This helps to prevent issues from running over into a mental health first aider’s home or personal life.

As part of their role, mental health first aiders encourage

employees to identify sources of support in addition to professional help, such as support from friends and family.

5

Monitor - Keep track of your efforts by running regular staff engagement surveys that can help to monitor

whether people feel that their mental wellbeing is better supported at work. This could bring out areas where you need to improve, or

create new ideas such as employee assistance programmes, changes to job design or fundraising for mental health charities.
