CASE STUDY

Kitchen crafted and finished to perfection

F

orth Décor was contracted by Artisan Joinery to paint a kitchen they were designing and building for a homeowner in Worcester. The firm had full confidence that Paul Forth would deliver the end finish to complement the high standard of artisan work involved in the build. Paul described the project to The Decorator...

Artisan Joinery aim to design and build bespoke pieces of furniture rather than kitchen units. Every unit is crafted to fit the space and is unique. Their aim for the kitchen was to create a finish that looks like the kitchen may have been there for ever. Mouldings were copied from other features in the house and

incorporated into the bespoke design of the kitchen. It needed to be really functional and practical, quickly transforming from a working kitchen to a pretty piece of cabinetry. From Artisan’s initial client meeting to completion was nearly a year

in the end. The client was very happy to take it slowly as they were fitting the crafting of the kitchen around the rest of the build. Artisan Joinery also crafted the new sash windows, Accoya French doors and bespoke skirting and architrave. Simon, Director of Artisan Joinery says, “If you are doing true

bespoke work, it can take time to refine designs with the client to get the right results. As this project was high end bespoke work, we all

knew this was going to take a while and we were all very accepting that this would be the case.” The kitchen arrived with us in stages due to the sheer size of the

project. Firstly, the carcasses arrived and after a light sand they were finished in hard wax oil. All preparation and finishing were carried out by hand to get the best result. Next we prepared the doors and drawer fronts. They were sprayed with

two coats of primer, de-nibbed between coats and allowed to fully cure prior to the top coats being applied, again by spray application with Teknos Futura 20. The primer and top coats were applied using a Graco 390 PC machine

with a 308 FFLP Tip running between 800 and 1000psi. For the top coat we used the higher grade 800 finer grit sand paper to create a smooth and flawless finish. All the unique mouldings, trimming and skirting were detailed by hand to ensure a flawless finish and enable touching up to be done easily.
