A QUICK Q&A WITH PDA MEMBER Kevan Handley
How long have you been a painter and decorator? I have been a decorator for 40 years, I started back in June 1979 where I served a three-year apprenticeship with my local authority (North Shropshire District Council).
Do you have a specialist area? I specialise in private and domestic market. Giving my clients a vast range of services whether it be straight forward emulsion or a bespoke service tailored to their requirements.
How long have you been a Member of the PDA? I have been a PDA Member for four years and shortly going into my fifth year.
How has membership of the PDA benefitted you? I would say that the PDA has been beneficial to me and my business, I have spent some fantastic evenings with the PDA and fellow Members.
Are you on social media? I don't do social media, not for me, just my preference.
Do you have any tips on maintaining a successful business? If I was to give any tips in maintaining a successful business this would be, be honest and always listen to your clients’ requirements, as we all know when things go wrong it’s usually due to a breakdown in communication.
Are you currently training any apprentices? I am not currently training any apprentices, but this is something I have done in the past and he has gone on to run his own business.
What would you say to encourage young people to become a painter and decorator? I certainly would recommend to the young people that there is a future for them in becoming a Painter & Decorator. As we all know, there is a vast shortage off all trades in the construction industry.
What are the most annoying problems you come across in your work? The only one that comes to mind is, suppliers letting my decorating merchants down which has a knock-on effect with me.
What do you most like about your job? I do enjoy all aspects of the work that I carry out for my clients. The things that I like the most about my work, is no two jobs are the same and I get good variation of decorative work.
What new products would you recommend to other decorators? Mirka and Festool for abrasives, dust extraction is the way forward. For last two years I have been working with Crown Fastflow products. I seriously think that Crown Paints have turned the business around and got their products at the top of the game.
