THE LOSS OF THE HISTORIC WINDOW

This casement window demonstrates the use of patent rolled-iron glazing-bars on a small scale.


Note use of Bristol blue and amber glass in the margin-lights, together with acid-etched obscure glass

Crittall standard steel windows, particularly those of the interwar period, can be dated quite closely by their fittings, which were updated in terms of design and production techniques every 2-3 years


The teaching gallery also holds many of the blue-prints for these designs, kindly donated by the Crittall Manufacturing Company in 1992. This record has recently proved its worth in the analysis of pre- and wartime steel windows in the Bletchley Park huts during restoration works

These aluminium top- hung windows were produced by Williams & Williams of Chester and in 1956 were considered ‘state-of- the-art’ when Kenneth Wood (of Kenwood food-mixer fame) built his startling new office block in Old Woking High Street, replete with curtain-walling and

up-to-the-minute office design and lighting. This piece was recovered by Charles Brooking when the office building was demolished in April, 1989.


With the increasing interest in postwar buildings and their repair, there is a growing need to understand developing window technology, including the use of materials, such as aluminium
